Newly opened phase 2 of Trivandrum Bypass/Mukkola-Karode (TN border) stretch of NH-66.
Get off the main carriageway and on to the service roads before this overpass to drive onwards to Kaliyikkavila in the present NH.

Ends here at present:
The onwards road looks like this now:

Hope EKK will be able to complete the remaining works till Kanyakumari within 1 year as stipulated.
Took about 20 minutes from Kovalam signal to Karode, for a distance of about 20 km. There are a couple of open junctions without any signal, where the traffic in the main carriageway is slowed down with barricades. Still people have not woken up to the fact that the road has been thrown open; hence, a lot of wrong side drivers.

Shuttering for last pier on the down bridge going on:
Staging being set up for pier capping on the other bank:
All piers up on the down bridge, except one:
Girders getting ready:
Also, what looks like steel plates for pier cap staging are stored on this side too. Looks to me as if things are moving fast for the bypass.

NEED FOR DIGITAL ACTIVE SPEED LIMIT DISPLAY
At the moment the speed on the Yamuna Expressway had been reduced to 80 kph, due the fog season. Now fog is only in the morning and sometimes at night. the speed limit is reduced to 80kph on both. What we need is active speed and road condition display. Instead of trying to repaint the markers, as is being done on the YE. The toll point boards should be the first, followed by the speed limit markers. On the Delhi-Ghaziabad section the speed limitation has just been declared with the old markers unchanged. The cops are collecting over 4L per day.
So active indication is a must.
My wife just went to Kanpur on this route, and on the YE cars were slowing down just to see if she was in trouble in her BMW doing only 80kph. While caution is desirable, the active variable speed limit indication is highly desirable. If we keep the speed limits realistic it helps everyone. Once we go 'active' speed limits can be reduced due to visibility, accidents, etc. Also it may help reduce overspeeding.
This post discusses not NHAI projects but a bribery trap incident, which involves two of NHAI's top ranking officials who have been arrested. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday made six arrests, including two senior officers of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), as part of an inter-state probe into an alleged bribery case.
One Arvind Kale is a General Manager and Project Director based at Nagpur and another Brijesh Kumar Sahu, Dy General Manager, who is based at Harda, M.P. were trapped. An amount of Rs 1.10 crore was recovered during its search operations conducted in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh (MP) at the accused persons' official and residential premises, including the alleged bribe amount, agency sources said. Four others are from the contractor-firm.
It was alleged that the firm's directors were delivering bribes to various public servants of NHAI through their employees in lieu of issuance of completion certificates, processing of bills, and smooth progression of awarded works, among others such favours or work, pertaining to various road projects awarded by the public-sector entity, NHAI, the sources said.

Classic case of our political shortsightedness.
An underpass was already planned there when the highway was being widened in 2016-18. However local opposition (read shop owners in the junction) protested it being built and as expected local politicians supported them (including our globe trotting world MP).
Result is one of the stupidest junctions that I have ever seen in Tvpm. There should be some semblance of planning to even say it is bad planning. And the fact that the Chakkai flyover that ends just 500m away couldn't be extended has another bigger backstory.:Frustrati
Balaramapuram junction on the parallel Karamana-Kaliyikavila road faces the same woes. Local traders not allowing for an underpass or flyover and pushing for a traffic junction. After a decade, authorities would realise the inevitability and begin construction at a higher cost.
