driving holidays from Goa

This is largely aimed at Goa-based members, but any information is welcome.

I love to drive to a holiday destination from Goa, and am looking for anything interesting for a family holiday with kids, within a day's drive from Goa, that would mean around 500 km driving distance. Have already been to Mahabaleshwar, Lonavla, Matheran and ganpatiphule, but have no knowledge of other places. Anyone has experiences to share?

Re: driving holidays from Goa

You are in the middle of paradise man. Surprising you need to ask that question.

The whole Western Ghats and the whole of the Konkan region is out there to be explored.

From vengurla upwards right upto kerala to the south. There are some amazing places. Open a map point to any location on this parts and just drive there. I have been to almost all places on my bike. But mine were more of get on the road and worry about the destination later kinds of trips. So have slept in verandas to railway station waiting rooms.

But now this belt has a lot of touristy places.

Start with Malwan. A one day trip.

Re: driving holidays from Goa

What should we recommend to the people who live in the paradise called Goa?

Try Hampi and Bijapur.

Thanks fellers. But I need as much detail as you can provide, along with experiences.
@spitfire, this will be travelling with wife and kids, so sleeping impromptu is not on the menu! But thanks anyway.

Re: driving holidays from Goa

You can drive down along the coast : Murudeshwar - Bhatkal - Udupi, Manipal - Mangalore.

If you're looking at a 1-way distance of 500km, you could consider Jog Falls, Kudremukh - Hanumangundi.

Guess even Coorg fits the bill.

You're spoilt for choices man!

Filcord,

These are some nice options

a) Belgaum - Gokak falls - Badami (Make badami as base and explore surroundings) - Aihole - Hampi - Bijapur

b) Karwar - Gokarna - Murudeswar - Udupi (Make udupi as base and explore) - Mangalore - Bekal

c) Karwar - Gokarna - Jogfalls - Tirthahalli (make this as base and explore). Take a look at the following post of mine

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...ve-malnad.html

d) Kolhapur - Satara - Hills around Satara like Kaas plateau etc

e) Sirsi - Yana etc making Sirsi as base explore North Karnataka

Re: driving holidays from Goa

All those who are suggesting Hampi - are you sure monsoon is a good time to head there? I vaguely remember someone telling me that some of the sites are inaccessible during the rains as the approach road is submerged.

Re: driving holidays from Goa

Thanks guys.
Hampi is great, have been there twice, but not with the kids, as they're too young to appreciate so much culture and history without any other fun kid stuff.
Yes of course, I'm looking for suggestions not necessarily for the monsooon months, but all year round. main holiday time are May and sometimes October.
December unfortunately is when the world beats a path to Goa, and that includes cousins and siblings from outside, so someone has to be there to man the fort!
