Chennai to Shillong

Hi guys,

Need some help to plan a visit to Shillong and Digboi with my grandmother. i wish to take her to her home town once, before she gets really sick.

I googled around and it seems Guwahati is in the middle and i really need to plan effectively if i have to visit both places in 4 days.

I will be landing in Guwahati. So i need help in how to plan this trip so i can go to both places?

What is the better mode to travel from guwahati to digboi?
Which way should be first? G-S or G-D?
Is there anyway i can rent a cab to drive through? I would love to drive but would prefer the better mode if it is advisable. I can even borrow a car from my relatives in shillong to go to digboi.

I will be starting on 12th and planning to return on 15th or 16th.

Please advice.

Re: Chennai to Shillong

Hi,
Option 1- Take a Guwahati - Dibrugarh train. Hire a car there (or in Tinsukia)
Option 2- Fly to Dibrugarh.
Option 3- Drive from Guwahati. Kaziranga will be on the way.

Shillong is a branch off. Does not fit in.

Re: Chennai to Shillong

If time is of the essence for you, then you will need to fly down to both places.
Take a direct connecting flight and land up in Dibrugarh and take a taxi to Digboi. Spend a day in Digboi and fly back to Guwahati in time to take the chopper ride to Shillong. Spend a day in Shillong and take a chopper ride back to Guwahati and take a connecting flight out! In case a chopper is not available, you can always take a taxi from Guwahati which will take about 4 Hrs to drop you off in Shillong and come back to Guwahati the same way.

A drive through or a train trip will not afford you the time to visit both places.

This is what i would recommend keeping in my mind you are going with your Granny and you have tight time line.

a) Day 1 12 Aug - Fly staright to Dibrugarh via Guwahati and take a taxi to Digboi.

b) Day 2 13 Aug - You can spend time exploring Digboi and surroundings - visit tea estates etc and drive upto Khonsa in Arunachal for nice view of Arunachal Pradesh.

c) Day 3 14 Aug - Fly back to Guwahati from Dibrugarh and drive straight to Shillong. Night stay in Shillong

d) Day 4 15 Aug - Explore Shillong

e) Day 5 16 Aug - Back to Guwahati and Chennai

I dont advise driving all the way from Guwahati to Digboi. It is a long drive and will take full day and very tiring. Since it has been raining heavily in Assam raod conditions may not be good.

You will not be able to go to Kaziranga as it will be closed now.

Choppers are highly unpredictaible in this season and don't think of it as an option.

With your timelines, train journeys are ruled out as it will take minimum of 48 Hours from chennai to Guwahati and again another 24 hours from there to Digboi.

Do let me know if you need any taxi from Guwahti to Shillong and i have a very reliable friend who opeartes in Guwahati.

Re: Chennai to Shillong

Hi klassics45, Fauji has charted out the best possible itinerary for you. However, please keep in mind that you will be travelling during the very tense Independence day weekend (August 15) and during that time there are usually bandhs in both Assam and Meghalaya. Road transport may be erratic during August 15. Please keep that in mind, and it is advisable not to move about on that day.

I would suggest you postpone your travel by a week, if possible.

Re: Chennai to Shillong

Spending the day in Dibrugarh on August 15 makes sense, rather than travelling. Good plan, and have fun there
