Need some help on road conditions on the following stretch...

Belgaum - Khanapur - Londa - Ganeshgudi - Joida

I am planning to travel from Belgaum to Karwar via Dandeli.

Hi folks,

I am travelling to Ganeshgudi (Dandeli) tomorrow.

The route is fairly simple, and through NH 48. Can anybody who knows this route, or has used this recently answer the following queries:

- How is the road condition? Are there any major diversions or bypasses that I must lookout for?

- We are planning to start quite early (4 am). Are there any good 'Breakfast' joints en-route, as this will probably be the only break we take?

- Recommendations if any?

I travelled to Dandeli on 11th of this month and below is the route I took after taking diversion from NH48. I was following the Gmaps and this is suggested route on maps.


After Chitradurga road widening work is ongoing with quite many diversions, but they are well marked and easy to spot.
Tadas-Kalghatgi-Haliyal has mixed road conditions but manageable. No idea about the other route suggested in this thread of taking diversion somewhere on Hubli-Dharwad bypass.
Regarding food there are quite many Kamat and CCD's on the way along with other hotels. Since I was driving from Chennai, I stopped for breakfast at Kamat Dabaspet and one coffee break at CCD near Shiggon.
Yes, you can cover the whole distance with only one major food break and be in Dandeli for lunch with 4AM start.

Just saw your final stop is Ganeshgudi. In that case I guess you need not goto Dandeli, instead continue straight on SH28 after Haliyal instead of taking diversion onto to SH46.

The Tadas option can be a quite a saver. But in general I have only read mixed responses about that route. But in day time, I think it would worth it to hit Haliyal.

And yes for Ganeshgudi no need to go to Dandeli. One will then need to come all the way back to Joida to take the Ganeshgudi exit.

I see 3 options from Belgaum to Sirsi -
[1] Belgaum>>Khanapur>>Haliyal>>Yellapur>>Sirsi

[2] Belgaum >>Dharwad>>Kalaghatgi>>Yellapur>>Sirsi

[3] Belgaum>>Hubli>>Tadas>>Mundgod>>Sirsi

My considerations are driving pleasure and scenic route.
I am very apprehensive about truck/lorry traffic care ore.

As such, which route is currently the recommended one?

We rode to Murdeshwar a fortnight ago.
Route -Pune -Belgaum -Dharwad -Kalghati -Yellapur -Kumtha.
Dharwad Kalghati is in a very bad shape.
On the return we came Via Yellapur Kalghati Hubli Belgaum. A few extra kms but very good roads.

Last weekend we Rode to Dandeli.
Route - Pune -Belgaum -Khanapur -Ramnagar -GaneshGudi -Dandeli.

Belgaum city- Khanapur -Ramnagar is a complete disaster. All roads are under construction.
Khanapur -Ramnagar 32 km is the worst section for cars.
On our return we took the Dandeli -Ganeshgudi -Haliyal -Dharwad -Belgaum -Pune.

We were on Adv Bikes, like the Africa Twin and Bmw Gs so the bad patches were a complete off road experience.
Cannot imagine what would happen to the cars.

My BIL is planning to drive to Dandeli from Pune in the last week of Oct, the car will be loaded with passengers and luggage. What route is recommended to be taken amongst the below options:

1. Pune-Karad-Kolhapur-Belgavi-Khanapur-Ramnagar-Dandeli
2. Pune-Karad-Kolhapur-Belgavi-Dharwad- Haliyal-Dandeli
3. Pune-Karad-Kolhapur-Belgavi-Kittur-Alnavar-Haliyal-Dandeli

Which route has the best road conditions since BIL would be driving in a new Safari? Also any recommendations on eateries post Belgavi in option 1 & 3 and post Dharwad in option 2, kindly share.

I would suggest #2. But please note there is no clear exit from the Hubli-Dharwad bypass on to the Haliyal road. Please exit (here). Take the dirt road till you hit the Haliyal road. And then drive towards Haliyal by going below the Bypass road.

What is the best route to drive from Panaji to Dandeli? New driver, only ladies travelling in the car. Please suggest a safe route and also a route that is with generally good wide roads.

I took the Yellapur - Haliyal - Alnavar - Kittur - Belgaum route during this weekend's return trip from Murudeshwar to Pune.

Excellent road conditions with scant traffic between Yellapur to Haliyal and from Alnavar to Kittur. Between Haliyal to Alnavar, roads are good but there is some local traffic.

This route is shorter by ~30km compared to the Yellapur- Hubli- Belgaum route. The smooth tarmac and jungle canopy are other plus points. The biggest draw however, has to be that it completely avoids the pain that is the Hubli Dharwad bypass.

Definitely recommended for anyone going towards Udupi/Murudeshwar/Gokarna from Belgaum.
