Yercaud to Pondicherry

I am planning a circular trip from B'lore - Yercaud - Pondicherry - Kanchipuram - Bangalore.

I wanted advice on the Yercaud - Pondicherry leg. Which one of the below options is recommended :

Option 1 : Yercaud - Ayodhyapattanam - (Salem - Ulundurpet Road NH68) - Kallakurichi - Ulundurpet - Villipuram - Pondicherry

OR

Option 2 : Yercaud - Ayodhyapattanam - (Cuddalore - Vridhachalam-Salem Road SH10) - Joining NH45 Chennai Tiruchi Highway - Villipuram - Pondicherry

Thanks in advance.

Option 1 is better as you would be able to do good speeds. Road quality is very good. There are plenty of decent family eateries too.

Re: Yercaud to Pondicherry

In Option 1, you have missed mentioning Athur which comes before Kallakurichi. Most of this Salem-Ulundurpet road is now 4-laned and in good condition although widening is still incomplete till Athur. Kallakurichi town has no bypass yet, so expect some slow down there.

In either case, you will need to do Salem-Attur section which is a pain currently with the road widening. I would advice not to take this stretch during night.

I plan to drive this stretch during the daytime. How many hours would Option 1 take ?

My estimate is 6-7 hours from Yercaud.
Yercaud-Ayodhyapattinam would take 1-1.5 hours. Are you planning to take the Kuppanur route or going to touch Salem?

Ayodhyapattinam-Attur should take minimum of 1-1.5 hours.

No I do not plan to go to Salem. Where do you suggest I stop for lunch (have kids who would go bonkers on empty tanks) ? I can then plan my departure from Yercaud properly.

There is an Adyar Anand Bhavan at Ulundurpet.
You can have a break there.

I agree with Amp. You would not find any decent eat outs after Salem. Adyar Ananda Bhavan is good option.

Re: Yercaud to Pondicherry

Reviving an old thread. I am actually requesting information for the other way round - Pondy to Yercaud.

Google Maps comes up with the following 3 routes. Which one you say should I go with? Have in-laws along with me so couple of decent family restaurants on the way would be of immense help.

Thanks for your inputs!

Re: Yercaud to Pondicherry

Pondicherry - Villupuram - Ulundurpet - Kallakurichi - Salem - Yercaud should be the best bet. That way you can hit 4 lane faster

You have A2B in Ulundurpet.

As earlier suggested :
Pondicherry-Villupuram-Ulundurper-Salem by-pass entry - Yercaud Ghats.

Pondy-Villupuram is a narrow road.

As regards to Hotels:

Ulundurpet-Salem has Aryas and Saravana Bhavan at couple of places.
Ulundurpet GST (NH45) bypass has A2B.

What I would have loved to travel:

Pondy-Villupuram-Thirukkoilur-Theerthamalai-Harur-Kuppanur-Yercaud. But surely not advisable, when there is family around.

Pondicherry - Vilupuram - Ulundurpet - Kalakuruchi - Yercaud would be the best bet.

I stayed in Grange resort in Yercaud in the past when I last went there in 2012 and it was quite good. You can take the Kuppanur route to Yercaud and don't have to enter Salem city.

Route mentioned by searacer is good. I found the roads to be good in that stretch when i took that route two weeks back, especially from ulundurpet to salem. I am assuming you will take tindivanam by pass from pondy to join NH. Also, i stayed in TGI STAR Holiday resorts in Yercaud when i went there in 2014. A decent place and it had lot of families staying there. Its situated before Yercaud town, near GRT hotel.
