Next Sunday our family (inc. kids & granny) is making a trip to Mussoorie from Gurgaon for a few days holiday.
Please post suggestions regarding recommended stops enroute (and where not to stop), route to take, things to see/do in Mussorie.
Thanks in advance.
Actually your best bet would be to eat in delhi itself, as there is nothing good on the way. You can stop for coffee at coffee day near meerut. Its on the highway itself. There are two routes
1. Dehradun - Mussourie
2. Haridwar - Rishi - Chamba Musssorie. IF you want to stay at chamba or Kanatal hill stations(Abour 30-40kms) from mussourie you take the second route. If you are staying in mussourie itselfm go via Dehrdun.
Start early as you will have to pass through Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad. If you meet rush hour traffic you will be spending 2 hours in delhi itself.
start as early as posiible.
try to cross meerut before 7-7.30am
after that roads are quite open.
if you got stuck in local traffic before meerut, say in modinagar, etc. then you'll be waste too much of time and patience!
here is a roadmap from delhi to mussoorie:

plan accordingly.
one more thing,
travel on this road only in day light and try to avoid travel in nights. it still has some notorious elements playing on roads in night. so better be cautious and keep your vehicle in sound condition.
drive safe.
hi ashok!
i have personally driven to mussorie umpteen times and the best way i find is 2 start in delhi and stop not before dehradun. the runtime from delhi to dehradun was always between 4.5-5 hrs provided we left at 4 in the morning. i guess its best to sleep early the day before and leave at 4-4:30 so that u can beat all the traffic. from gurgaon it might take u 30-45 minutes more.
just in case some people want 2 take a small break CHEETAL wud b a good point. since i do not stop there other fellow members wud b able 2 tell u the location. its probably the only place on the way where u might wanna take a break. also keep followint "JAIN KI SHIKANJI". the best advertising campaign in india. what do u say guys.
i have posted a map u might find handy at
i also stay in gurgaon so if u need ny more info contact me on 9811135883.
I agree with Navindhyani
1. Start early - not later than 5..
2. If u need to take a stop - do that at Cheetal ( just after a small town called Khatoli)
3. Best of Luck with the crazy Dehradun traffic once u reach there..
One more thing, if possible, stay a Dhanolti of chamba(30-40kms from mussoirie). Much better places, and less chaos.
There is an alternate route, slightly longer, but way better
I used it a few times and I found the drive a lot less hazardous and peaceful than the horrible meerut route..
take the Ambala highway and go up to Yamunanagar, there is a right turn 25-30 kms after Yamunanagr (I forgot the exact name of the place ) that will take you to Nahan ...From thre, you can take the Paonta Sahib - Herbertpur - - Dehradun - Mussoorie route...
The journey time is almost the same this way, but the drive is really enjoyable compared to the horrific experience of the Delhi-Meerut-Dehradun rouute
I did this long time back, Shahjahanpur to chd via dehradun. The road was very good then and very scenic. How is it now? I thought Ambala-Yamunanagar route has bad roads
hey ashok its a hectic route as there is heavy traffic most of the time , lots of carts ,tractor trolleys and a lot trucks all around.well there are quite a few places to eat around , but cheetal grand( my choice) at khatauli and moolchands are good ones.Petrol pumps are not an issue as there are a lot of them enroute. try avoiding travelling at night.be careful while driving from dehradun to mussorie as there is plenty of rash driving in that part. happy driving ..happy holidaying
lots of things to see in mussorie --camel back ,kempty falls, dhanolti (round 40kms from mussorie),bhatta falls and u can ask for some local guidance to goto cloud ends and old british cemetary.
all together nice place to chill out for a day or two.
Thanks guys for all the replies - some very useful feedback & info. I'll post a short write up once we get back. Shame I'm going to miss the Delhi meet though.
before climbing 2 mussorie do go to sahastradhara in dehradun. if u enjoy water its a nice place.
Thanks again for the input. We had a lovely stay at the Jaypee hotel in Mussorie (recomended). The route we took was Delhi-Ghaziabad-Modinagar-Meerut(bypass)-Roorkee-Dehradun-Mussorie. There's a decent restaurant halfway called Cheetal Grand where we stopped both ways.
Here's a little report I wrote for the M5 boys:
