Mumbai Guwahati Route

Guys,

A few friends are planning to drive down from Mumbai to Guwahati. We would like to follow the GQ as far as possible and would prefer 2*2 lane national or state highways. We would also like to take a route which is absolutely safe. We are OK if the 3000 km route increases by a few hundred kms.

Information about the peculiarities of different segments, safe travel times, places to eat or stay, good petrol pumps or anything else that may be helpful or interesting are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

Why dont you consider going via Hyderabad, you get to drive on 4laned roads for a large majority of the drive.

Day 1:Mumbai-Hyderabad can easily be done in 1 day in around 14hrs.

Day 2:Hyd-Vizag on Day 2.

Day 3: Vizag-Kolkata

Day4:Kolkata-Siliguri(tough drive around 14hrs on single lane road).

Day4:Siliguri-Guwahati (Siliguri-Cooch behar-Gauripur-Goalpara)https://maps.google.co.in/maps?saddr...mra=ls&t=m&z=8

Its going to be a tough drive beyond Kolkata and long drive conditions.

Overall Drive route:

Thanks Ranjit. That's a good route. We are planning to take it on the way back and we want different routes for both legs of the journey.

Thanks.

Hi.
Wonder which route you took and what was your experience about the conditions and facilities en route.
If you took the Hyderabad Vizag route was it possible to bypass Calcutta?
Is there any route which would minimize the driving on the notorious 2 laned potholed road termed as NH 34.
Regards
PS:It is NH 34 that goes from Calcutta, isnt it or am I making a mistake?

Well, my friend made the trip and I was unable to join him. He was ably guided by HighWay King H V Kumar, who is the perfect person to answer all route queries.

Cheers!

Hi.
Thanks your reply. You couldnt join, busy?
You do not get a better person than HV Kumar saar for road queries. No two ways about it.
The reason I asked was that I was thinking of starting my journey on sunday the 24th.But seeing the news today about cars being damaged and highways being jammed at the drop of a hat, blast in Dimapur etc,I am beginning to have second thoughts.Being nearly 69 and driving after sunset a big no-no I dont know what to do.
Anyway once again thanks your reply.
Regards.
PS:A few days back gave you a link to a newspaper article.Hope you saw it.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that the sun sets early, up north east. I have heard of the sun setting as early as 2.30pm in the North East during peak winter. Currently, sunset would be at 5 - 5.30 pm in most of the places in the North.

You could get close to Assam and then play it by the ear. Stay back for a couple of days before proceeding, if the situation is tense. But it all depends on your personality.

I did try to check out the link but I landed up at the home page of ToI without the specific content. So I had dropped it.

Cheers!
