Last week, I traveled from Bangalore to Kannur and back. Overall, its doable in a sedan. Some sections will test the vehicle suspension and driver patience.
Virajpet Bypass: The section after the initial climb is currently under construction and being re-laid. No other work happening, but not much to complain either.
Ghat Section: A few kilometers from the Perumbady check post around the lake and downward is pretty poor, as is the segment near the Karnataka-Kerala border. However, in the sections in between, work is ongoing to resurface the road and build culverts. The stretch at the Karnataka-Kerala border is very bad.
Repair work is progressing.
It is only the initial and final small stretch that is bad, in between the ghat it is well laid up.

Any latest update on Bittingala-Perumbadi stretch and ghat section? Is it same or worse?

Traveled last week. They have removed the tar and leveled it and readying for tarring. In a way no those large pot holes that were there earlier. Drivable. Not sure if tarring started in the last couple of days.

I drove to Kannur on 1st May, tarring is not done in this stretch yet, but drivable. Ghat section tarring is done except beginning and end portion, again drivable.

have the potholes been filled ? I mean at the end and beginning of the ghats? any signs of that section being readied anytime soon?

End (Kerala side), yes, filled and levelled. There are still many potholes at the beginning of ghat section. Whatever portion re-tarring is completed is very good.
There didn’t seem to be any signs of work going on to fix the remaining. All those equipment’s and vehicles are no where to be seen. Now with monsoons approaching looks like they are done with it and we have to live with what it is.
Starting stretches of the ghat section at the top is quite bad.

If you have observed earlier, the first 4-5 kms after Perumpadi lake downhill seems to have always been neglected. whenever work was carried out in the rest of the ghats, this stretch was ignored or rather given inferior treatment in terms of quality of work. Any idea why? Something to do with clearance from Forest dept ? Just guessing.

I did not spot any equipment enroute on 1st of May but there were couple of machines including a motor grader doing the leveling work at the end of the ghat section (near Kerala border).
