He also told me that a 40km stretch after Raichur till beyond Sirvar is in a shabby state which will need me to drive slow but makes no difference to him and he does not even slow down.

Pretty much the same feedback that is known to all of us. Looks like the road conditions outside of Raichur town is still in shambles

Getting out of raichur itself will take about an hour due to horrible roads

Belgaum-Chorla-Panjim is an excellent road to enjoy the drive

So which is a good route for Hyderabad - Goa. A friend plans to drive down in his XUV500.

Same as what Avi mentioned. Raichur/Bagalkot/Belgaum/Chorla/Goa

I would say Hyd-Moinabad-Kodangal-Sedam-Gulbarga-Jevargi-Bijapur-Athani-Miraj-Kolhapur-NH4-Amboli-Sawantwadi-Panjim

http://goo.gl/maps/xODoU

Via Athani-Kolhapur works out longer unless one is headed to northern part of North Goa.

I did Hyderabad Home-PVNRE-Shadnagar-Pargi-Sedam-Gulbarga-Bijapur-Bagalkot-Belgaum-Chorla-Candolim a couple of weeks back. Distance is approximately 730km and took 14 hours including breaks for BF, lunch, fuel, etc.

The 2km stretch from Shadnagar towards Pargi is absolute disaster. Subsequent road is potholes ridden and 2 bridges are under construction. Strictly avoidable route.

Only toll was 65/- from AP-KA border till Gulbarga.

Return was Candolim-Chorla-Belgaum-Bagalkot-Bijapur-Gulbarga-Sedam-Pargi-Chevella-APPA Junction-Langar Houz-Hyderabad Home. Distance is 730km or so and took 13 hours including BF, lunch, fuel, etc. breaks.

Gajadonga suggests a slightly different route between Bijapur and Pargi. Worth trying out. Request him to post it here.

This was much better route. Few stretches had top tarmac missing else roads are butter smooth. For those who have recently travelled till Chevella/Vikarabad, no stretch will be worse than that. Even Goa side of Choral ghat is only as bad. I do not remember any potholes anywhere.

I had an short trip from Hyderabad-Sedam-Gulbarga-Wadi-Yadgir- Hyderabad.

Hyderabad-Sedam
The roads are rough small stretchs till Kodangal but no potholes.
Kodangal-Pargi-Ribbonpally-Sedam good roads.
Sedam- Gulbarga is a toll road bliss to drive.

On the way back came through Wadi Yadgir-Pargi-Hyderabad.

Wadi-Yadgir minimal traffic average roads no potholes.

Yadgir- Ribbonpally-Pargi Excellent roads throughout. Minimal traffic.

From Kodangal- Gulbarga

Yadgir- Kodangal[/ATTACH]

Yadgir to Bijapur is around 100kms which on enquiry was found to be in good condition. We can avoid Gulbarga in this route.
So finally it will be Hyderabad-Pargi-Yadgir-Bijapur-Belgaum-Chorla-Goa

Sorry for the typo was editing from mobile app of Team-BHP.The route from Yadgir to Sindagi is around 100kms.
From Sindagi-Bijapur is excellent route througout.

Between Bijapur and Goa, perhaps plan to use Chorla ghat road on one way and Amboli the other way.
If taking Amboli route, Athani to Sankeshwar can be done through Chikodi rather than going through Kolhapur, decent state highways.

You can refer to my previous posts for detailed route information.

I did the below route when traveling from Hyderabad to Goa, this was in the month of Oct'13

Hyderabad -> Mahboobnagar -> Raichur, the roads were OK, but other BHPians have advised Hyd - > Bhootpur - > Raichur, so this can be the preferable route till Raichur.

Raichur -> Bagalkot is Bad, Just OK and OK, in the order from Raichur.

Bagalkot -> Belgaum -> Chorla is Good. Chorla -> Querim is pathetic (not sure how it is now), as bad as it can get. Then onwards it is pretty OK till Goa.

Which side of Goa are you planning to go? The route can vary depending of that also.

The best route as per me from Hyderabad to Goa (unless it is to the southern most part of Goa which is abutting Karwar) is via Chevella, Pargi, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Belgaum & Chorla Ghat.

However, from Pargi to Bijapur, one has 2 choices : (1) Via Yadgir ; and (2) Via Gulbarga.

Route 1 (via Yadgir) : http://goo.gl/maps/nmF1U
Hyderabad - Goa : Route Queries-hydgoaviayadgir.jpg

Route 2 (via Gulbarga) : http://goo.gl/maps/vKdBf
Hyderabad - Goa : Route Queries-hydgoaviagulbarga.jpg

Zoom into the maps as per links above to get detailed turn by turn directions including about crossing Belgaum.

Route 2 has only one toll (65/-) while route 1 has none. Goa Entry Tax of 250/- per car is anyway payable by whichever route one takes.

I have done both to and fro by route 2 in December 2013 and would stick to either route 1 or route 2 in future until and unless I come to know any reports about road deterioration on these routes which may not happen till next monsoon season.

For those who may wonder why did I not try out route 1 and stuck to route 2 both ways. Well, Gajadonga messaged me about route 1 while I was already driving back towards Hyderabad and I did not want to stop on the way to consult maps.

Just before reaching the Almatti Reservoir (a little before Bagalkot) while going from Bijapur towards Belgaum, one crosses a village called Kolhar. Do not miss eating fresh curd there. Super amazing delicious curd.

GetSurya, here are the detailed maps for you to choose from.

@Hyd_Traveller, route 2, that you took is a known devil, though a wee bit longer. With route 1, the road condition for 100 or so kilometers between Yadgir and Sindhanur is not known. And going by your horrid experience of 20 kms on your onward journey on another route nearby, I'd not suggest route 1 till someone tries it out.

If GetSurya is going on his Fortuner, then there is no problem with any route.:)

Thanks to all for the information on roads.

We (2 couples & a kid) are planning to drive to Goa on this Friday in my vRS.
Our plan is to start at 13:30 ish from Kondapur, and we want to rest at Belgaum, and start next morning from Belgaum to North goa.

Below are considerable routes with distance and time based on Google maps. I am confused to choose the best for me.
My preference is neat roads even at cost of some extra miles.

1) Gajadonga's suggested Route
684 KMS, 12:55
Via Pargi, Yadgir, Bijapur, Bagalkot (Avoiding Gulbarga)
http://goo.gl/maps/TC9O7

2) Shortest but Basavana Bagbedi road condition is unknown
658 KMS, 12:57
Via Pargi, Yadgir, Shorapur, Basavana Bagbedi, Bagalkot
http://goo.gl/maps/aJXXV

3) Tried by my friends in October
665 KMS, 13:03
Via Pargi, Yadgir, Shorapur, Lingusur, Bagalkot
http://goo.gl/maps/TC9O7

4) Google Maps Preffered ( Raichur - Lingusur is not good as per previous posts)
667 KMS, 12:14
Via Mahbubnagar, Raichur, Lingusur, Bagalkot
http://goo.gl/maps/Mo3xD

Thanks in Advance

Take the one suggested by Hyd_traveller via Pargi and Gulbarga. Information on that route is barely 3 weeks old.

Take the route suggested by Gajadonga else take the route suggested by me as above. I did the route suggested by me in 3rd week of December and found the roads to be pretty decent throughout. Sheelz also did this route (till Bagalkot while going and from Belgaum while returning) and was happy with it. I have suggested it to GetSurya also.

Edit : The map as per Sl. 1 in your post which you say is route suggested by Gajadonga is wrong. He suggests that after Yadgir, you stick to SH16 till Bijapur while the map posted by you does not show the route via Bijapur. Please refer to my earlier post and choose Route 1 (that is what Gajadonga has suggested) or Route 2 (what I did in my December trip).

Sure Thanks @hyd_traveller,
There seems to be some changes to the plan, we may change the course.

back from hyd-goa-hyd drive :

Took this route : hyd - mahabub nagar-raichur-lingsur-mudgal-hungud-bakalgot-lokapur-belgaum-chorla-mapusa-calangute : 728 kms .

started at 5am from hyd and reached at 6.30pm & return started at 12.30pm and reached hyd at 2.30am.

hyd to makthal - good roads except for occasional speedbreaker after mahabub nagar
maktal to raichur bye pass - bad roads with lots of speedbreakers;bye pass road is good.
raichur to sirvar : broken tarmac with lots of speedbreakers
sirvar to lingsur : good road with lots of speedbreakers.
lingsur to mudgal : good roads ,however crossing mudgal town takes time, narrow roads and very congested.
Mudgal to belgaum is very good .
Belgaum to jamboti : narrow roads will take time to cross from here till Karnataka border roads are very good on chorla ghat , Goa side of chorla ghat is ok .

overall good drive of 1500 odd kms and with that i cross 1 lac kms of driving since 2008 feels good:)
