Here is the latest information on the Hyderabad -> Goa route. I had followed a customized route shared by some Goan dude who lives in Hyderabad and frequently does this route.

Hyd -> Zaheerabad -> Humnabad -> Kalaburagi -> Jevargi -> Sindagi -> Bagalkote -> Tilari ghat -> Mapusa -> Candolim.

Hyderabad - Goa : Route Queries-goa1.png

Started at 6 AM. This route was very good until kalaburagi (Covered Kalaburagi in just 4 hours including breakfast) and then the roads started getting narrower. Was left with undivided 2 lane road and the traffic was terrible. After Devargi it was even worse and there were patches where road construction was going on. Then from Badami until Belgaum it was good again and I covered good distance. Again from Belgaum google suggested a faster route via Tilari ghat and that is when things went bad. Since this was the MH patch, the road had to be bad laden with potholes. The ghat area was really long and I somehow made it to Candolim by 9 PM.
Total time taken was 15 Hours with 2 big meal breaks (1 hour total) and few stretching breaks of 15 minutes overall. The roads were mostly good on this route except where the construction was ongoing and after entering MH. Good eateries en-route.

Food Spots:
Hotel 24 for breakfast/Dinner. This is near Humnabad. Good, clean and new place.
Kanthi Resort Badami for lunch. You will have to take a detour near Bagalkote of around 2-3 kms but this is a proper resort and the food is good.

While on the return trip, took the most traveled route via Amboli ghat (as suggested by google) but avoided the Nippani -> Sangli route and took the bypass.
Arpora -> Amboli -> Sankeshwar -> Sangli -> Sangola -> Solapur -> Omerga -> Hyd

Hyderabad - Goa : Route Queries-goa2.png

Started at 10:50 AM.This route had a mix of roads and traffic. While this route passes mostly through NH, the road conditions were not the best. Goa till Amboli ghats was a breeze but Amboli ghat itself was jam packed at multiple places (probably if you leave early this might be avoided). Amboli till Sangli was a massacre. Undivided 2 lane roads with as much traffic as possible and at this time of the year, sugarcane overloaded trucks/tractors/carts/whatever vehicle you can think of hogged the roads. It was really a pain to pass them. I covered only 200 Kms in the first 5 hours :Frustrati
Then as soon as I entered NH 166, which is in very good condition, I picked up pace and covered around 250 Kms in around 2.5 hours. At Naldurg again this sugarcane pandemic started and the traffic was stuck for several kms. Took a dinner break at Omerga and then directly headed to Hyd. Reached around 12.
Took almost 13.15 hours via this route. Roads were very bad around Amboli ghat and then mixed patches till Sangli. Then starting NH 166 till Naldurg, good roads where triple digit speeds can be achieved. Much traffic from Naldurg to Omerga and then the usual roads till Hyd. Since it was late there was not much traffic around Sangareddy.

Food Spots:
You will find ample of restaurants in and around Ajara.
Punjabi Dhami in Omerga and then near Bidar.

Overall I would suggest to use route 2, via Solapur in usual cases except during the harvest season as sugarcane pandemic will slow you down.
Also there are very less to no eateries on this route.

Route 1 is good when driving a low slung sedan. After the roads construction is finished this might be a better route. Also I avoided Vijaypura from Kalaburagi on this route and was stuck on State Highway. Probably the NH can be taken and it should be better and faster.

We drove down to Goa in the first week of December. We spent a couple of nights in Dandeli and took the Raichur route to get there. We started our journey at 3:30 AM and reached Dandeli by 4:00 PM. We packed breakfast and stopped for lunch in Hubbali. Since we left early in the morning, we were able to cross many villages along the highway before the locals were awake. I would say that about 70% of the road was in good condition.

Hyderabad - Goa : Route Queries-screenshot-20241231-16.15.46.png

On our return trip, we took the Solapur route. One of my cousins lives there, so we stayed over for a night. We left Candolim at 5:30 AM and arrived in Solapur by 1:00 PM. My cousin suggested that I get onto NH48, which leads to the NH 166 i.e. Kolhapur-Sangli-Solapur Highway.

This route is definitely much better compared to the Raichur route. Once the roadwork near Kolhapur is completed, the Solapur route will be fantastic for anyone travelling to Goa.

Hello fellow bhpians,

I am planning to drive from Hyd to Goa on 11th. Google maps suggest a route via Humnabad->Solapur-Sangola->Miraj->Boragaon->Ajara->Amboli->Banda->Goa as the fastest route with travel time of 13hr 30 min. Can someone please confirm if this is the best and fastest route to reach Goa? Or Would you suggest an alternate route because of road conditions. Would it be advisable to follow google maps at every juncture.

p.s: I am planning to start at 3AM on 11th and would start back at 7AM from North goa on 14th. This is my first trip with family and I would like to plan it better.

Thanks
Rakesh

Since its your first trip with your family, I would strongly recommend you take the Solapur route with a night break in that city.

The other routes are kind of barren with no good options for toilets etc.

If passengers include ladies and children, you can thank me later for this suggestion. :)

Since you have suggested a night break in Solapur, can you recommend any good hotels in the city? Am planning a trip later during early summer, and don't want to drive without an overnight break.

Thanks @bblost for the advice.
I assume you are suggesting for the aforementioned route i.e, Solapur-> Miraj -> Amboli.
I am not keen on halting at Solapur as that would require an extra day that I am short of. :) I plan to start at 3AM from Hyd and reach by 6PM at max.

Thanks,
Rakesh

My last trip to Goa from Hyderabad, I took the Belagavi route and stayed overnight at a hotel.

The details are in this thread.

I have not had to stay in Solapur but there are a lot of options in that city.
The Bangalore - Mumbai (Pune) thread will be a great place to check it out.

The challenge with getting to Goa is the ghats section that you will encounter towards the end of the journey.
Ghats, Fatigue and Darkness are like an unholy trinity when travelling with family and I do my best to avoid it.

Return to Hyderabad has no such issues as we are travelling on very good divided highways with lots of lighting and no sharp turns.

Solapur is the best route right now. If you pass Hyderabad-Sangareddy by early morning, a big plus further.

But I would suggest to avoid Miraj Boragaon and Miraj Chikodi as you are most likely to encounter lots of village and tractor traffic. That leaves the kohlapur detour as only option, which will have few flyover works diversions, but should be less annoying comparatively. If you do try this route, do provide update.

Here is the route information of my trip from Hyderabad -> Goa -> Hyderabad.

Onward journey
Started at 5AM on 11th (Sat) from Hyd. Reached Goa by 5:30PM including breaks of 2hrs. Took Humnabad->Solapur->Sangola->Miraj->Boragaon->Ajara->Amboli. Roads were good from BHEL to Karnataka border near Omerga. Was able to maintain good speeds. Omerga to Naldurg is pretty bad. Naldurg to Solapur outskirts is ok. Had stopped for breakfast on NH52. Was manageable. NH166 till Miraj is very good, can maintain steady 3 digit speeds. I took state highways from Miraj through some villages. It wasn't that bad for me and I did not come across many sugarcane laden lorries/tractors. Roads are narrow at places, potholes, little traffic and really good at some places. This leg of trip was mix of everything but not frustrating enough for me. :) Had stopped for lunch at Hotel Goa Ves, food here was very good. A portion of Amboli ghat was pathetic. In all took me a total of 12hrs 30min to reach hotel in Anjuna with multiple stops.

Return journey
Started at 9AM on 14th (Tue) from Calungate. Reached home by 10PM including 2hrs for breaks. Took Goa->Kolhapur->Sangola->Solapur->Hyd. For return journey I took the Kolhapur route. Currently there are lot of road diversions on the NH48 and NH166 around Kolhapur. Once this work is completed this might be the best route to Goa via Solapur->Kolhapur. Had to take couple of unnecessary detours because of maps. As usual pretty bad roads around Naldurg to Omerga with no proper reflectors and sign boards nor highway lighting. :Frustrati I took a car underbody hit somewhere near Naldurg and crossing a speed breaker with overspeed without being aware of it because of no markings. Completely slowed down after these two incidents until Karnataka border. From there was able to maintain three digit speeds comfortable. Quite contrasting road conditions near Maharastra and Karnataka borders towards Hyd. Overall journey time was 13hr including 2hrs breaktime. No food joints worth mentioning on the return journey.

Glad your Miraj Boragaon section drive wasn't as frustrating as mine. Thanks for also covering the Kolhapur route.

Naldurg bypass is close to opening. Will provide some relief, as for the pending flyover works, bumpy roads of that section, we are still a few years more away from relief. Having used Raichur route in previous trips, Solapur is still the best route now to Goa from Hyderabad. If Maharashtra Shaktipeeth Expressway materializes in few years, trip in under 10 hours would be on.

Thanks for sharing this information. Was extremely useful. I did this route on 19th Jan and found the roads to be way better than the Raichur - Hubbali route.

On my last visit to Goa (last year, same time), I had taken this route but found the roads in Maharashtra to be rather painful with their undulations. So this time, I took the Raichur route and man, did I regret it. The Raichur roads are even worse than before. Some parts of the road are being repaired but that's only made the problem worse. Thankfully I had planned to stop over at Hubbali for the night which made that leg of the journey less stressful.

On the way back, I took the route you mentioned. Started at 5:15 AM, reached Madhapur by 4:25 PM, with ~45 mins spent on stops (fuel, washroom etc.). The two best things about this route:

1) Much shorter Ghat section when compare to the Raichur route. With 2 passengers prone to motion sickness, this was a welcome surprise.

2) The ~170 Km stretch on NH 166. What an amazing road!! Hardly any traffic, could set cruise control at triple digits speeds and just relax through this stretch. This made the overall journey rather stress-free.

I am planning a Hyd to Honavar trip and was checking if this will be a good night halt.

I haven't been to the resort for almost 2 years now, so cannot comment now. Better to call the Resort to confirm their pet policy.

Regards.

Update: Just found out, Kanthi Resort is still pet friendly. Call Mr Girish at +91-99801 02314 to confirm.

Did a quick Goa Trip.

Onwards:
Left at 12:30am and reached at 10:30am. 715KMs

We took the Solapur - Meraj - Nipani - Ajara - Amboli - Sawantwadi - Panjim (both ways)

Return:
Left at 11:30am and reached home at 11:30pm

Stopped for a nice dhaba dinner at Dhami Punjabi Dhaba at Sastapur - Karanataka, this is near Hotel Gujarat

Other updates:
We pretty much drove non stop. I thought we were able to cover a lot of distance as there was less local traffic in the night.
Ran into some sugarcane traffic especially once we left the NH during both the legs.
Road conditions - Hyderabad- Solapur NH once you cross Karnataka continues to be patchy, the good thing that I noticed since my last trip is that a couple of flyovers seem to have been completed.
Naldurg single road is still bad wonder when would that bypass be completed.
Meraj - Nipani - Ajar : sector was fine. One has to watch out for rumblers and random speed breakers at every village though.
Amboli ghat has a few bad patches, but that is kind of expected. The waterfall season is over, so we did not get any parked traffic on the ghat.
Amboli-Sawantwadi continues to be pain with many bad patches.
Sawantwadi-Panjim - Work is on going on the NH, so lots of diversions and traffic.
A couple of speed cameras as you enter/exit Goa, with cops collecting fines.
On our return journey got pulled over at the Goa/Maharashtra excise checkpost and ecenthough I was not carrying any alcohol, was asked to pay chai paani! Did not want to argue so paid ₹100.
Also during the return leg was stopped by MH cops a couple of times for paper checks but they did not demand any money as everything was in order.

Update:

Naldurg bypass road is almost done and opened for traffic.
I drove through it this Sunday (yesterday). 90% work done and much convenient now to cross Naldurg.

Also Tilari Ghat is closed since last week for repair work until further notice. So take Amboli route till that time.
