Isnt this the NH207 you are are talking about? If so doesnt NH207 meet NH4 at Dobbaspet and not Neelamangala??

yes,i generally take the option to nelamangala from dodballapur as it gives me more of nh4 and found the road to dobbespete from d'dblpur to be bad usually.yes you are right nh207 goes to dobbespete.

Good option... I dont know this road to well, (except for one or two runs to the airport from Whitefield) but it looks like we can avoid the busy stretches on ORR-Hebbal. So it would be Whitefield->Hoskote->NH-207 to Doddaballapur? And yes, after that, is there a reason why you recommend joining Tumkur road at Neelamangala instead of continuing and joining it Dabaspete?

Thanks, ranjitp1, for clarifying. I'll try your suggestion. Route looks longer than taking ORR to join Tumkur road, but then, I think ORR may have heavy truck traffic. I haven't been on this stretch for sometime, but a few years back when I was on my way to Chikmagalur, this stretch (ORR, Tumkur Rd) was really bad.

I would go with what @julupani mentioned. Doddaballapur-Nelamangala is also rough at places. 207 to Dobbaspet is way more smooth and a much much better option. Since he is continuing on NH4, he does not lose anything. In fact he gains good time.

Actually, I was looking up the routes on Google maps, and it seems like there's 30+ km difference between

1) Joining Tumkur Rd (NH-4) via ORR-Hebbal-Yeshwantpur
vs
2) Joining Tumkur Rd (NH-4) via Devenahalli-Doddaballapur-Neelamangala/Dobaspete.

So does it really make sense to take this to avoid traffic? I'm planning to leave Whitefield at about 6:30AM.

If you are in Whitefield I would suggest :

Whitefield-BIAL Road-Devanahalli-Doddaballapur-Dobbaspet. Its good roads all the way.

Did Bangalore - Chitradurga - Hampi route over Ramzan weekend. Started from Marathahalli around 4.45 AM, decided against driving towards Hosur road - NICE road entry since it was early morning. Took Domlur - Ulsoor - IISC - Yeshwantpur - Tumkur road route. Big mistake since though traffic was less had to navigate through all the potholes in Bangalore. I guess ORR or NICE road would have made less time consuming option. Toll booths were relatively free and reached the coffee day before ~15 Km before Tumkur around 7.30 AM. After a break of some 15 mins started Chitradurga. NH 4 all way till Chitradurga is in good condition.
Took left from NH 4 on Chitradurga to visit the fort, reached fort around 8.45 AM. Seems fort timings are from 6AM - 6PM. By time fort sight seeing and breakfast was over it was around 11.30 AM. Took NH 13 towards Hospet, as mentioned by many the road has heavy truck traffic, however there are very less or no other traffic apart from the trucks and road condition is good all way apart from two patches. One about 15 KM from Hospet and another just as you enter Hospet. Reached Hospet around 1.45 PM after getting stuck in traffic near railway crossing at start of town. Took another half hour to figure out where our hotel was located.
Road condition in and around Hospet and Hampi is very bad.

I visited Hampi last weekend, and took ranjitp1 & ampere's suggestion for the route.

I had a feeling that this is a much longer route to catch NH-4/Tumkur Road, but still it was a good option. Reason is that it's mostly free of traffic. You do encounter slow moving trucks, but even though it is 2-lane, there are long and straight stretches, so overtaking is not difficult.

After reaching Dobbaspet, I took the right to NH-4, and continued on till Tumkur-Sira-Hiriyur. From Hiryur, I took SH-19 to Bellary, via Challakere. Near Bellary, there is the bypass road, which is not well marked (I was using Nokia maps to navigate, and thanks to it, we could catch the crossing). From there, NH-63 to Toranagallu, where our hotel was.

Roads are all good throughout, except near Bellary.

I travelled with my family today in our Civic from Bannerghatta Road to the Hyatt at Torangalu to explore Hampi and other areas nearby. Used the Tumkur Road uptil Chitradurga and turned into the Hospet Road.

I perhaps made the worst possible road decision of my life by following the Mapmyindia device. We got off this well paved two lane highway at Kudligi and took the Sandur road to Torangalu. Forget a low GC car, this road is not fit even for 4 wheel off roaders. A nightmare of red oxide, slush, boulders, rashly driven tippers and umpteen trucks, non existent roads across admittedly pristine forests visible through a red haze awaited me and my family. When driving from Bangalore to Bhopal couple of years back, the car never touched the bottom. Today, we literally scraped through. To top it all, at every village, they have decided to test your patience, and added a series of logic defying, axle breaking, bone crushing speed arresters, as if this is what the man and government forsaken Martian crater otherwise known as a state highway needs desperately.

BHPians - avoid this road. I am going back via Bellary and Hiriyur, but not before I get the car checked at the Bosch service station in Torangallu town. Shame, considering the car was serviced in time for this trip just 2 days back. However, the property is great and the JSW colony in which it is located is wonderful. Tired but full of high spirits for the rest of the trip. You can break our back but not our spirits.

Agree to every point. That road is only for trucks and so are those speed breakers
I still remember having driven a xylo on that so called road 2 years ago ...given the bouncy nature of the xylo, the rear passenger saw hell that day.

What will be the best route to Hampi from Bangalore w.r.t road conditions? Our vehicle is a Ritz with 4 pax on-board. Any special points to consider for the journey (detours to avoid bad patches, good food options on the way etc. etc. )? I have heard the roads in Hampi are in very bad condition? Is it advisable to hire a cab for visiting the historical places? Is it necessary to have a guide? Also any pointers to accommodation (not too expensive) options will be helpful.

Thats the better option these days. No need to goto the SH via Chelkere.

Hotels : KSTDC Mayura at Hampi.

The better ones : Royal Orchid and Malligi at Hospet.

I think you meant Bangalore-Chitradurga-Hospet-Hampi.
