Folks,
I see the NH4/Challakere and NH7 as two options listed to reach Hampi. But what about the NH50 - the shortest route? Appreciate if you can throw some light if I had missed out any key information on avoiding this route. |
If you see the previous few pages its all about NH50 (Old NH13) or NH150A. If you plan to stay in Hyatt which is at Toronagallu, nothing beats Hiriyur-Challakere NH150A. (Followed by Rampura-Talur. You can even bypass Bellari).
But if you stay in Hospet then its a different ball game. Because reaching Hospet is not easy via NH150A. NH4-NH50 is a better option. Have not seen many Bangalore folks taking the NH7 to Hampi.

Thanks! I intend to stay at Hospet, hence asked. There were bad reports on NH50 few pages back, but I see you suggesting NH50 only for Hospet!:)

Yes thats the best way..and sadly the roads are bad atleast when i went there 3 months ago. There was some road widening going on, not sure how much progress has been made since. But still a good part of the road is patchy and full of pot holes with loads and loads of lorries enroute.

Can you elaborate more on this please? If NH50 is bad, doesn't it make sense to take 150A even with the longer distance?
Also, from Whitefield, the NH7 is only 25km longer. So maybe that is also an option, since getting onto NH7 from Whitefield is much faster compared to NH4.

The problem is the last mile. Bellary-Tornagallu-Hospet is high on truck traffic and the road is bad. May be its worth trying : Challakere-Rampura-Talur-Hospet.
(Route Link)
Rampur-Talur is brilliant. And Talur to NH63 (beyond Toranagallu is 90% Good)

Overall its a 20km detour. But I think its definitely worth it. But please note, hardly any break options.
Luvurride, please do give a feedback if you happen to travel on this route. I'm planning on traveling this weekend and am planning on taking the route via Tumkur.

I'm traveling only by next weekend. Hence would really appreciate your feedback before my trip here!:D
However, I might most likely take the NH7-Anantapur/Bellary route. From Whitefield, it is much easier to latch onto NH7 than NH4, saves a lot of time!

I've done Hospet - Toranagallu - Ballary Bypass - Hiriyur - BLR in end August. The road quality itself is quite good intact and I left Hospet around 8.30AM the truck traffic itself was on the lower side especially because it was relatively early in the morning. I did however get plenty of traffic exiting the Ballary bypass and the speed breakers on the bypass road are so big that it may make cars like civic go see-saw if not take with care.
Planning a Hampi trip. Staying in Hospet. Three in the family, I'm the only male and driver.
Leaving 21st 7 am from South Bangalore (Bannerghatta Road). NICE to Tumkur Rd; planning breakfast at Hotel Blue Star (77.160019 E, 13.302783 N - linking not working here for some reason) just before reaching Tumkuru.
Road condition and dense lorry traffic make me a bit wary of Hwy 50. Also hesitant to take the Ramapura - Talur route since it's lonely / isolated. Perhaps I'll take the following:
Hiriyur - Challakere - Bellary Bypass - Toranagallu - Hospet. Return the same way.
Leaving for Bangalore 25th morning after breakfast. 3.5 days should be enough for Hampi, Anegundi, et al, I guess.
Many thanks to all who've posted route and Hampi info here. clap:
Came yesterday from Bangalore via Tumkur -Chitradurga-Hospet route. The Chitradurga-Hospet road is pathetic and best avoided. Will take a different route for my return leg.

I am planning to travel tomorrow. I am glad you mentioned it. In fact the hotel staff also suggested the Bellary route. :thumbs up

Please note:
- Bellary bypass is a pain: Huge humps
- Bellary-Hospet is rough and with heavy traffic.
You can try the Rampura-Ubbalagandi-Talur-NH63 intersection option.
I left on Saturday 8th and returned yesterday 11th.
ON going took the Tumkur road, leaving at 7:45 AM and got caught in a massive traffic jam from NICE road junction. People were going on wrong side of road on the toll road and crawled till Chitradurga. Chitradurga - Hospet road was absolute pits. Total time traveled was 7 hours with 2 short breaks.
Took the Bellary road on the return. This took 7 hours too but was must more relaxing on account of the good condition of the roads. There are killer speed breakers from Hospet - Bellary byepass.
DId not find too many eating places on the entire stretch till almost Bangalore.
I would think that on non long weekends, the Tumkur road might be better
Took the Hospet-Bellary- Bangalore route on my return leg on 11-Oct and found it much better than the Tumkur route. I see many folks complaining about the Bellary bypass road, thankfully I had actually driven right through Bellary town and didn't face much issues. Made the distance in slightly under 7 hours.

Many have suggested driving through Bellary town as a better option. Usually the killer humps on the bypass are for the trucks. Also just at meeting point to Hiriyur Highway (150A), the railway crossing sometimes gets clogged again more because of trucks rather than a train!
