I am planning to visit Hampi over Christmas long weekend. I plan to drive down from Bangalore. Request those who have knowledge of the area and the roads that lead to it in adivising which route to take. I plan to start really early from Bangalore (5 am) and plan to reach Hospet by 2 pm. Is that achievable. I plan to stay at Malligi.
Also plan to spend 25 evening, 26th and 27th morning in Hospet any suggestions on what is the best agenda for these three days.
Any suggestion please
I am looking out for the same info. Has anyone done the Chitradurga - Hospet NH13 of late?
Regards,
Sandeep
I went to Humpi during 1st week of October during the north karnataka. I would recommend taking the following route
Bangalore-NH4-Tumkur-NH4-Hiriyur-SH19-Challakere-SH19-Bellary-NH63-Humpi.
The only portion that was really bad was NH63. SH19 is probably one of the best roads I have ever driven. It is an undivided state highway but road quality is very good. One thing to keep in mind on SH19 is there are multiple speed breakers at the start and end of each village en route. NH63 was in very bad condition. I am not sure how good it is now but when I went it had potholes about 2 to 3 feet deep covering whole width of the road or more precisely road hardly existed between all the huge craters. It is only about 40 odd kilometers on NH63 so it should be manageable. It is probably the best way to Humpi in all the available options.
Hey thanks a lot for that.....how long did it take for the route that you took?

+1. This is the best option. Bellary to Hampi is bad but, as mentioned above, it is only 40km. Manageable even in small hatchbacks.

I took the same route early this October. Left Hampi around 11:30 and was in Bangalore by 5pm. This including a traffic jam in Bellary for 45 minutes and and lunch break in Hiriyur for about and hour.
Planning for Bangalore - Bellary in first week of June. May end up visiting Hampi as well.
I see possible two routes - my primary concern is road condition.
Route 1:
NH7 + NH63 (334KM):: Bangalore - Ananthaput - Goothy - Bellary
Variant
NH7 + SH19 (308KM):: Bangalore - Ananthaput - via SH19 - Bellary
Route 2:
NH4 + SH19 (324 KM):: Bangalore - Tumkur - Hiriyur - Bellary
which route is better from road condition perspective?

Bangalore-chitradurga-hospet road is good. only thing to worry is traffic jams at hospet. since you are going to hampi the effect of traffic jams will be less. I came on this road on march 28th 2010 from bijapur.

Condition is now better? Heard reports that it was very bad, good to know it has improved.
I confirmed with the people at Hospet. This road has improved it seems.

Thanks RKG, for the reply... that is really good to know as I need to travel with my mother, who was recently operated.
Only concern I had with this route :: Bangalore - Chitradurga - Hospet - Bellary route is the additional 90KM I will have to clock (390KM).
Any idea how is the Bangalore -NH4- Hiriyur -SH19- Bellary as this will be around 300KM.

chitradurga to Hospet/Hampi is about 144 km, you will need between 2hr 45 mins to 3 hrs, though it is a NH you wont find any facilities after you leave chitradurga. Take a good break at chitradurga, at VRL, then continue on to Hospet. Road condition after 10 to 15 km from chitradurga improves, but be watchful for speed breakers, specially a speed breaker after few kms of Reliance petrol pump towards hospet.
