Route query: Chennai, TN to Shirali, KA

I'm planning a drive from Chennai to Shirali (Uttara Kannada district, KA)

My plan is as follows:

Chennai to Bangalore: I've done this a million times so no details here

I have the following alternatives in mind.

Route 1: Bangalore - NH4 - Nelamangala - NH48 - Solur - Kunigal -
Nelligere - Hirisave - Channarayapatna - Dandiganahalli - Hassan -
Alur - Sakleshpur - Naranhalli - Shiradi - Golitattu - Uppinangadi -
Mani - Panemangaluru - Mangalore - NH17 - Suratkal - Mulki - Kap -
Udupi - Kallianpur - Hangarkatta - Kota - Kundapura - Gangoli -
Baindur - Bhatkal - Shirali

Route 2: Bangalore - NH4 - Nelamangala - Dobbasapete - Tumkur - NH206 - Gubbi - Nittur - Doddaguni - Kibbanahalli - Tiptur - Arsikere -
Banavar - Kadur - Birur - Tarikere - Bhadravati - Shimoga -
Hirnahalli - Kumsi - Anandapuram - Sagar - Talguppa - Mavingudi -
Gersoppa - Honavar - NH17 - Kasarkod - Manki - Mavalli - Shirali

Which of the 2 routes is better in terms of roads? I'm not too worried about extra distances provided the roads are good.

Please also bear in mind that I will be travelling in a TN registered vehicle.

Yes, he told me he couldn't see any private vehicles with TN registrations on bangalore roads. he is really going mad & calling me everyday to know about the NOC position here. i believe he starts the car & sits inside & cleans his dash & switches off & puts on the cover.

hey E_L , i dont think that is true.. Coz my frend has been using his car and also I have seen quite few TN vehicles at office and around bangalore.Absolutely not heard of any kind of vandalism aganist TN registered vehicles.

@hrag , my colleague just did route 2 mentioned by you till Honnavar ,which is his hometown and he confirmed that the road is good and navigable.Check with Samurai, he should be able to throw light on the road conditions beyond and coastal karnataka.

He already checked with me and I told him not even consider the first option. That is too round about.

Right now NH17 in Mangalore and Udupi district is in good shape.

There is no vandalism as such, but the fear is always there when you have to leave your car in an open parking lot. Maybe he is a little overreacting.

Guys, don't scare him. If at all, very slight risk exists around Bangalore or Mandya/Mysore area. But nobody gives a damn in the coastal areas. Even the recent bandh didn't take off around here. He is not really driving through any sensitive areas.

Doesnt look like hrag is heading towards Mandya / Mysore. North of Bangalore, there would not have been any incidents of TN registered vehicles being targetted.

Hrag
Thats right....you should have absolutely no problems as regards the TN registration. Many of my office colleagues here in Bangalore are using their TN registered vehicles without any probs.

The second route via Tumkur, Shimoga, Honnavar is indeed best. This road infact should be better than the road via Mangalore both in terms of traffic as well as road condition (it was pretty bad in the ghats after Skleshpur though they have done patch work now). There is only one bad stretch though between Tarikere and Bhadravathi just befre Shimoga - even this should be repaired by now.

And that is exactly what I wanted to know when I put in the bit about the TN registered vehicle. Whether any areas along the route were sensitive.

Thanks all, I think I'll take route 2 on the way up and route 1 on the way down. And will keep the forum posted on the conditions.

I did this trip 2 weeks ago. Don't have any photos etc. so am not posting in the travelogue section.

The route on the way up was:
Chennai - Bangalore: NH4 upto Ranipet; NH46 upto Krishnagiri; NH7 upto Bangalore.

Bangalore - NH4 - Nelamangala - Tumkur - Sira - Hiriyur - Chitradurga - Davanagere - Kodiyal - Ranibennur - Haveri

Haveri - Sangur - Adur - Sirsi - Devimane - Kumta

Kumta - NH17 - Honnavar - Kasarkod - Manki - Bailur - Mavalli - Shirali

The route through Haveri and Sirsi was recommended by hvkumar and it is a delight from Sirsi to Kumta via the Devimane ghat.

The way back:
Shirali - NH17 - Bhatkal - Maravanthe - Kundapur - Saligram - Brahmavara/Barkur - bypass to Manipal before Udupi

Manipal - Bailoor - Karkal - Sanoor - Mudbidri - Venoor - Belthangadi - Ujire - Dharmasthala - join NH48 near Golitattu

Golitattu - NH48 - Shiradi - Sakleshpur - Alur - Hassan - Channarayapatna - Hirisave - Kunigal - Solur - Nelamangala - NH4 - Bangalore

Bangalore to Chennai via the GQ again.

akroy has covered much of this route in his Goa and Saligram travelogues.
