Without doubt CBE-Salem-Ulundurpet-Tindivanam-BLR. Much lesser traffic compared to the Krishnagiri route.

Thank you,but how about the roads?some few years ago Salem to ulundurpet was worst where you cannot drive beyond 40km/hr

Be ready for a surprise then! Its end to end 4-laned! Some sections after Salem towards Attur are two lane. But rest all 4-laned roads with exits for all the towns in place.
And there are decent hotels on the road too.

Those 2 lane sections between Attur & Salem are as good as the 4 lane section! Amazing & picturesque! Those curves , slopes & blind corners! Cross winds are the only concern. That road is Every petrolhead's delight! :D

Drove on NH 45-Chennai-Tindivanam-Villupuram-Ullunderpet and turned West to Salem. Just a fantastic drive.

The better drive was on NH 79 (Not marked on Google???) from Ullunderpet to Salem via Attur. Some portions were not 4 laned but the road was one of the best ever travelled till date. :)

It used to be NH68 which looks like has been renamed. And yes this section is the best option to CBE instead of the ever crowded Krishnagiri sector.

The construction was happening when the highway renaming was made official. So they've put milestones with the new highway number.

Was going through this thread. I am planning to drive Chennai to Coimbatore. My initial plan was to take the Chennai - Vellore - Krishnagiri - Salem route, but after seeing Judemayne's update, I have changed my mind :). Now I have decided to take the
Chennai-Tindivanam-Villupuram-Ullunderpet-Salem route.

I have never driven through this route, so few questions -
1. Is the entire stretch a 4 lane?
2. Are their good restaurants in this route?
3. Is the road condition from Salem to Coimbatore equally good?

Thank you
-Anand

I am planning to drive from Coimbatore to Chennai. Which route is the best? The one via krishnagiri-vellore-ranipet or the salem-ullunderpet route??

And how is the road after Ranipet??

Thankyou!!

You should scroll up to read the recent posts! :)
Anyways, to put it in short - NH45(via Ulundurpet) is the best bet.
Bangalore highway(after vellore) is in a very bad shape, avoid that if you want to save your suspensions.

I am travelling to Coimbatore from Chennai next week with my family. Please suggest me from the listed option which is safe even to travel during nights and having nice food joints.

1. Chennai - Vellore - Krishnagiri - Salem - Kovai
2. Chennai - Villupuram - Ulundurpet - Salem - Kovai
3. Any other route

Thanks!!

Hi,

2. Chennai - Villupuram - Ulundurpet - Salem - Kovai is a good route..

The roads are well laid and there are ample food joints around. Please take care not to step out of your vehicle to venture out in search of food. Please park in well lit areas and accessible distance to your vehicle.

Drive safe

Take the Ullundurpet-Salem route. There is an A2B and other hotels as well closer to Ullundurpet before you reach Salem. Not sure about the availability of hotels if traveling during night time.

Take the Chennai - Ulundurpet - Kallakurichi, Chinnaselam, Attur, Salem route if you drive in daytime. Ulundurpet to Salem road is a state highway and will be preferable during the daytime. It is a little tedious to drive in the night facing the bright headlights of oncoming vehicles. For night travel you may want to go with 4 lane National Highway - Vellore - Krishnagiri - Salem.

Missed this in my earlier post. You may find this thread more useful for the ullundurpet route - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...ueries-15.html

Today I travelled from Chennai to Coimbatore via Krishnagiri. The roads up to Sriperumbudur were with patch works & few potholes but after that the road are just excellent. It's six lane till Krishnagiri & from there on four lane up to Avinashi & again six lane till coimbatore.
