The fastest route:

Day1: Cochin - Trishur - Palghat - Coimbatore - Bhavani - Mettur - Dharmapuri - Krishnagiri - Hosur - Bangalore - Tumkur (Kamat Upachar) (I think Kamat has a dorm to stay, other BHPians pls confirm?), otherwise u can halt in Bangalore

Day2: Blr/Tumkur - Sira - Chitradurga - Davangere - Ranebennur - Haveri - Hubli - Dharwad - Belgaum - Kolhapur - Pune

Try to start at 4AM from Cochin to reach Blr by 4PM
Try to start at 4AM for Day2 to reach Pune at 5PM

Another scenic plus longer route is Cochin - (NH17) - Goa - Pune... Do u want this route in details...then let me know? you can do this if not in hurry and want to chillout in goa and coastal karnataka...

AKRoy has a good plan doable by most fast drivers. Nonetheless, long driving days. Maybe, the better thing would be to stop over in Bangalore in case you have someone there to stay with, else better look for cheaper accomodation in Tumkur or Chitradurga. Even if you leave Bangalore, you can easily reach Pune the same day.

Roads are great throughout, except in Dharmapuri area (or is it only Toppur-Salem section that is in a mess?). NH47 from Cochin to Bhavani, State highway from Bhavani to Toppur, NH7 from Toppur to Bangalore and NH4 therefrom. Facilities are great. Reliance petrol pumps have good toilet facilities. We have exact locations of the Bangalore-Pune route. Traffic congestion is mostly in Hosur-Bangalore, Bangalore City, Bangalore-Nelamangala, rest of the route will be great. Now that rains have started, take care at the Davangere bypass.

No safety issues on this route. Food easily available, apart from regular dhabas, there are 2 Upchar kamats (first at Tumkur, second at Sira) and Reliance A1 Plazas.

Not sure whether Upchar Kamat at Tumkur has rooms. But Tumkur town (2-3 kms inside) has some good hotels - there is one next to the Bus Stand, forgot the name.

After Tumkur, Chitradurga Bypass has 3-4 decent hotels - no need to go into town.

Distance is around 1,500 kms.

NH17 is scenic but quite congested in Kerala, will be slower. But lot of exciting detours - temples, beaches, etc. Plus, the attraction of Goa. In case you want to skip Goa, you can take the road from Ankola (NH17) to Hubli (NH4) via NH63.

Mone Irfaan

Go to Edapally. Take NH 17. Follow it to the end - Panvel or somewhere. Then take the expressway to Pune.

First night - stay at Hotel Karavalli at Udupi. You'll need the rest after fighting all the bus drivers in Kerala.

Next night - stay either at Sawantwadi (Hotel Vakrtund is the one I stayed at - not highly recommended) or go further to Ratnagiri, or if you can push it, to Chiplun.

Cheers

Steer

Thoppur to Dharmapuri is excellent stretch...even the potholes of Dharmapuri - Krishnagiri stretch is patched up and also the NS coridor work is in place...so not so problem....
From Chitradurga BP till Haveri it will be slow because of frequent diversions....

As Kumar Sir suggested, NH17 till Ankola and then NH63 to Hubli is a nice idea as well....u can enjoy the Maravanthe stretch of NH17 and the entire coastal karnataka... but ya Kerala bus drivers are a menace...

The NH-17 route sounds great. I would recommend coming to Goa on that route via Mangalore and then after Goa go off NH-17 from Sawantwadi and follow the Amboli - Ajara - Uttur - Kolhapur (4 lane NH-4 here onwards) - Karad - Satara - Pune. Should be a good drive I assume. NH-17 is a fun to drive road especially around Karwar.

Steer, next time you stay over at Sawantwadi, try Balkrishna colddrinks for their delicious ICE-cream cocktail (home made stuff).

Irfan, go by the coastal route. It will be relaxing, even if it is longer. Moral's route seems to be the best. AK can help out as well with details on the coastal route.

I have taken this route while driving from M'lore to Pune about 6 months back. Between Ankola and Hubli, the roads have been absolutely murdered by the mining trucks from Bellary.. God knows what is their state now that the moonsoon has started.

some clarification on this section please, planning to drive down to kerala on sunday.

[quote=akroy;46Coimbatore - Bhavani - Mettur - Dharmapuri - Krishnagiri - Hosur - Bangalore[/QUOTE]

you have to take right when you are coming from bangalore after the thoppur ghat section right? and then on any other turns, junctions to watch out for??

i know the salem route so i rip, in this case anything in particular that i need to be cautious off, speed breakers, pot hole sections ,dangerous twisties ???

whats the option for break fast in between? (need decent place where family can use the loo also) usually i have my breakfast at salem, when i start by around 540 am from bangalore?
