Kochi - Goa through western ghats

Hello,

We are planning on a 8-day roadtrip from Kochi to Goa through the western ghats starting 15.04.2023. After a week long deliberation, we have arrived at a tentaive itinerary as below,

15.04.2023: Kochi - Madikeri
16.04.2023: Madikeri - Agumbe - Chikkamagaluru
17.04.2023: Chikkamagaluru - Halabeedu - Gokarna
18.04.2023: Gokarna - Goa
19.04.2023 till 21.04.2023: Goa
21.04.2023: Goa - Mangalore
22.04.2023: Mangalore - Kochi

However, we feel the route selection needs optimisation. Suggestions regarding stay and routes to be taken are highly appreciated. I drive a Scross and will be joined by a Honda City and a Hyundai Creta for this road trip.

Thanks in advance.

1. I hope you can plough through Kerala traffic till Kannur easily and the via Iritty to Madikeri.

2. Madikeri-Chikkamangulur : Agumbe route is circuitous. You should just take the standard route via Shinivarsanthe-Arkalgud-Hassan.

3. Chikkamagaluru - Halabeedu - Gokarna : Possible. Go to Bannavar on the old NH206 and head to Honnavar on coast and they're on to Gokarna.

206 is going through 4-lane conversion. So expect diversions.

Thank you ampere,

1. We will be starting really early anticipating the traffic till Kannur. So hoping that won't be an issue.

2. We really wanted to visit Agumbe, Dodda Mane to be precise and hence the detour.

Is it possible to do Chikkamagaluru - Goa stretch in a single day? Which route will be ideal?

Chikkamagalur - Agumbe - Maravanthe - Murudeshwar - Karwar - Goa for the best of coastal and ghat drives

The other option through some amazing ghat sections of the Malnad area is Chikmagalur-Shimoga-Sagar-Honnavar-Karwar-Panjim. Enroute you can stop by Jog falls also.

Chikmagalur to Panjim can easily be done in a day's drive via either of the two routes - some narrow ghat sections so just be a little careful. Should not take more than 10-12 hrs. If you want to split it over two days, you can look to stay at any of the coastal towns between Marvanthe and Karwar.

I guess, it is better to do Madikeri - Hassan - (Belur?) - Halebidu - Chikkamagalur

Take Agumbe route from Chikkamagaluru - Gokarna.

Re: Kochi - Goa through western ghats

Just finished a 1000+ km trip across karnataka by car..

Blore->tumkur->hiriyur->hosdurg->bhadra->shimoga->sagar->sharavathi->jog falls-> gersoppa->honnavar->karwar->honnavar->murudeshwar->udupi->agumbe->chickmagalur->belur->hassan->blore..

Any questions on road conditions , ask away.. roads were pretty good throughout for relaxed driving with very less traffic.

Re: Kochi - Goa through western ghats

Sorry Micheal for hijacking your thread but need some guidance here.

Traveling with family in a self drive caravan from Goa to Cochin. Preferred route was via mangalore - Kasargode but when I am assessing it on google map it’s showing via Bangalore due to some closure on NH66 near Kanhangad.

If anyone can guide us with an update, it would be great.

TIA
