I am making this new thread since I could not find any other thread barring some really old ones.

My wife and I are in Chandigarh in the second week of Feb for a function and plan to visit Amritsar for 2 days.

The modes of travel seem to be:

1) Air - Way to expensive and no direct flight so ruled out.

2) Rail - Intercity express seems okay but IRCTC does not allow me to book saying it is outside the booking period. (It is not so unless the advance period is <= 1 month).

3) Bus which does not agree with both of us.

4) Car which seems to be the most feasible. Ideally I would like to self drive from Chandigarh and drop car in Amritsar but looks like such options don't seem to exist so I am left with:

5) Hire a taxi from Chandigarh for 3 days. The advantage is that it is a door to door pickup/drop and we can use the car within Amritsar. The flip side is that from what I see the car is required only for Vagah and Amritsar can be done on foot and auto.

OR

6) Hire a taxi for a one way trip from Chandigarh to Amristar and use local transport.

Any suggestions on which option to take from practical point of view?

Bus service is pretty good between Chandigarh and Amritsar. Reach Amritsar via bus, then use local transport (Uber maybe) for local commute. If this does not work with you, then car rental for three days is the second best option.
