Bangalore to Ooty- Can we avoid Mysore

We are traveling to Ooty this Saturday.

My worry is that we might get caught in Dussera festivities in Mysore. Is there an alternate route to avoid Mysore?

Thanks
Shankar

To add to what androdev said, here are the coordinates for the Mysore Ring Road:

15 kms after crossing Nanjangud town and just as you see the 6 km Mysore milestone, turn to the left and take the Ring Road. Follow the signages, till you reach a point beyond Mysore City, after 26 kms of Ring Road, just 10 kms before Srirangapatna.

Bingo..

you will clearly see the markings.. (directions for ooty) you have to take a right from mysore road and keep going on and on..(GRS fantasy park, KRS road, industrial area, which has Infy campus and so on...)

you may feel it is bit lenghty but keep going straight as per directions

folks, I think he wants to know when he's driving towards Mysore from Bangalore. So it should be 10 kms after Srirangapatna you would have to take a right? Is there any board/landmark ?

Yes, there is clear signage, take the right turn when you are coming from Bangalore towards Mysore - you can't miss it.

Better to take left at the Ring road if you go from Bangalore to Ooty. You can reach the same Nanjangod Road by taking right (via KRS road, Infy campus etc) but its longer. The ring road is like an oval circle around Mysore, the right turn being the longer route. Follow this :
Turn left, drive straight, you will cross two intersection and you will reach a T junction. Turn Right there, drive straightabout 2 Kms, you will cross 3 rumblers, the last one has 7 nos and immediately you will reach a round about (you will see the police station on the R side) take left(Ginger hotel is here) follow the road (along the border of Mysore Zoo and you reach another Round about. Take right and you will have the police acadamy on the left, follow the same road along the wall and you will reach the Najangod Road. This route will save 20 mts than taking the R at the ring road. The direction signs are also displayed on this road.

the route till Ginger hotel is correct, but after that i am not sure abt what you have said..

again if he goes near to Mysore Zoo it will be crowded, and mysore palace is also nearer to the route you have given. i think the best route will be taking a right in the ring road junction

Take a right at the ring road junction, that is the best route...another 25-26km you will hit the NH212 towards Nanjangud...

Let the resident of Mysore speak and take his advice. He knows best .
Yeah am talking about deepak_ms .

I would follow Deepak's and Abhi's route, than take a left on the ring road from mysore road.

There is an alternate ring road (as mentioned above) to bypass Mysore, it goes along the curve of letter 'D'. If it is early hours, I suggest you go via Mysore. But surely avoid Mysore if it is in the evening (5PM to 10PM).

The ring road is incomplete - it is not a ring. The incomplete section is the one that connects to Ooty road. So avoiding Mysore city itself is impossible though you can avoid the city bus stand area by going via Bannur / TNarasipura road, via Lalith Mahal Palace and then briefly touch city before turning left to Nanjangud road.

Ask for specific directions at junctions.

Dont ask for Ooty road, that will confuse you or give wrong results, just ask for next point - for instance after turning, ask for directions to Lalith Mahal Palace and then to main Palace, then take a left to enter Ooty road directly.

Hardcore Mysoreans can correct me if I miss something.

as msdivy has said if u reach mysore before 9 AM you can go via Mysore city only, as it is Ayudapuja on saturday there will be less traffic.

if you are planning to return from ooty on sunday take this route which is mentioned by hvkumar

15 kms after crossing Nanjangud town and just as you see the 6 km Mysore milestone, turn to the left and take the Ring Road. Follow the signages, till you reach a point beyond Mysore City, after 26 kms of Ring Road, just 10 kms before Srirangapatna.

Oh my God! So much of confusion!

Ok, let me clarify this. The ring road is complete and there is no need to enter the city under any circumstances.

The simple solution is to cross Srirangapatna, get to the signal.

Just take a right at that junction. I'm sure you'd have slowed down because there is a signal there, but I am asking you to drive slow after you see "Fun Fort" on your right side (In case you miss that, there is a sharp left curve with a circle that seems a little weird). The signal is about 1 - 1.5 kms from there. The board is very clear and there is no way you'll miss it if you're a little attentive.

Keep driving on the ring road once you take that right, you'll come to a junction where you see Royal Inn, keep driving straight for quite a few kilometers. Keep going until you see a sign board that shows Nanjangud and Ooty on the right side. Take the right there and you're ready to rock 'n roll.

Some of them have got it wrong here, so shankaranand, I'll PM you my phone number - you can call me when you cross Srirangapatna or whenever you get confused.
