We started from Darjeeling and came down to Siliguri via mirik lake with a shopping visit to Nepal. So we were late and hence spent a leisurely day and halted in Siliguri.

Started early from Siliguri towards Agra and drove all the way to Lucknow. This way we got time in Lucknow for some chickan shopping

The drive from Siliguri to Lucknow took 16 hours in total including 1 hour each for breakfast(at ghar dhabha in the COCO BP Dhalkhola) and lunch(at swagatham dhabha in the COCO IOC Motihari).

Total distance was 1000kms. The only bad stretch was from Gopalganj till Bihar border. This 20 odd kms took 2 hours in our SUV. God help those sedan owners. Otherwise, 12 hours for appox 1000kms returns a very good 80km/hr speed.

And I believe there were bad roads some 30 kms after Forbesgunj as well. Else, the road is superb.

Yes you are right but that is just a small stretch of some 5kms may be.

That bridge has huge craters with rebars visible in most places. when a vehicle approaches from the other side, the bridge vibrates and you can feel that inside your car. Not for the faint hearted

The stretch after Forbesgunj has bad roads for about ~15kms

The bad stretch of road between Purnia & Muzaffarpur is after the Forbesgunj stretch. Rest is near Gopalgunj as Kumar Sir has mentioned somewhere.

Planning a road trip from Delhi to Darjeeling later this year (September). I assume Delhi to Darjeeling can be done in 3 days. Need suggestions on the following:

1. Route.
2. Road conditions all along.
3. Ideal places (Varanasi, Siliguri??) to stop for the night.

I don't think it will take 3 days to reach Darjeeling from Delhi. SS-traveller will be the best person to answer your queries as he did this trip recently. You can send a PM to him as well.

Thanks for the heads-up. Though I have not been to Darjeeling / Sikkim, I did travel from Delhi to Siliguri, then via the Coronation Bridge to Guwahati in October last year in a Swift. And again, I've come back from Chalsa to Delhi on the same route 2 weeks ago, driving a Ciaz.

The route is YEW & ALE from Delhi to Lucknow (6 hours), then to Gorakhpur, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Purnea and Siliguri via the NH27 (16-17 hours). The road is in excellent condition, except for a couple of short sections around Gopalganj and the UP-BR border where flyover construction is in progress. The section through WB is partly undivided, and has dense local traffic in the daytime, much worse than in BR. I'd rate this route overall as 7/10 and the NH19 to Kolkata as 5/10 in the current conditions (the Delhi-Lucknow route gets 9/10). It took me 24 hours to drive from Delhi to Siliguri (1500 km) in the Swift, and 25.5 hours from Chalsa to Delhi in the Ciaz.

Caution: Don't take the shorter route from Araria to Siliguri on NH327 even if Google Map insists (unless you're driving an SUV and enjoy riding over broken, bumpy roads). It's otherwise a car-killer of a route. Stick to NH27 only. Go via Purnea, even if it takes 30-60 minutes more to reach Siliguri.

Delhi to Darjeeling can be done in 1.5 - 2 days IMO. You can take a break at Purnea / Muzaffarpur / Darbhanga in case driving non-stop isn't your cup of tea.

I was supposed to drive down, but had to catch a flight, a friend, thanks to NGT, drove a Fortuner on 16th March from Delhi to Purnia. He started at 4 in the morning and reached Purnia at 10:30 at night.

He wasted an hour because of an upset stomach.

I will plan a overnight halt at one of the places suggested. This will be my first trip beyond Prayagraj, to Bihar, WB.

On return, if feasible would like to visit our ancestral town of Arrah.

Planning a trip to Darjeeling from Lucknow (figures since it sits on this route itself) in April 2022. Will be taking my Vento.
I am up for driving 14-16 hours at a stretch however wouldn't prefer more than 7 hours as parents would be travelling as well.

Have already flagged down Darbhanga/Garcia International as a pitstop (thanks to bhpian Graaja)

So, may I seek some advice on routes, roads and stops in 2022?

P.S: Would like to avoid rain but I welcome cold and fog

The trip never happened. We ended up going to himachal instead but there might be something this year
