Hey Guys,

Am planning to do a weekend roadtrip to amritsar. Can somebdy please advise me the condition of the roads, the time it takes, shortest route possible there and some good budget hotel to stay.


Would also like to know if its safe to travel in the night there on the highway?

Firstly All the best for your trip .
I haven't taken the route myself but would suggest You to take GT road.
Atleast within Punjab its quite good, smooth and well maintained.
It is a historical route in existence since ages.
As I see Kolkata + gurgaon in your location, In case you have driven to Gurgaon from Kolkata, Then you might have taken the GT road at some point of time or the other.
Will get you an opinion from my freinds in delhi who have driven till amritsar from delhi.

Whatever you do, eat at a place called "Bhravan da Dhaba" near Golden temple. The bestest food in Amritsar.

Nope haven't driven down from kol to Gur yet, but yeah i do belong to both the places so the 'Kolkata+Gurgaon'

Pure Punjabi khana. I just can't recall if they serve non-veg food (chances are it wont since its near the Golden temple) but I remember gorging on Alloo-Pyaaz kulchaas, sason ka saag(seasonal) and lassi.

Drive from Gurgaon to Amrisar is a beautiful drive, good by day but high traffic, but fantasic at night. No issue of safety, but Punjab cops can be pretty mean with out-of-state cars.

Flyover construction work, slow speeds
Panipat town entry, 15
Flyover construcion for next 8 kms, slow speeds hrough town

Turn right here to take bypass

6 kms down this road, turn left to go to Amritsar. You go over a flyover.
Amritsar, 85

All towns are bypassed, signages are excellent, and toll charges steep.

How much time will it take? Entirely upto you and your speeds. Have done the 500 kms through the night in 6 hours, but day time speeds should be less

Panipat flyover has opened recently so no probs here, but construction work at murthal has started so you might find some jam there. Rest all is ok to good

if you do in day, see tsk's post about haryana cops with radar guns - they love to catch speeding dilli gaadis :D

there's some more places near golden temple - esp the kulcha. See lonely planet. there are a couple almost seedy types but heavenly amritsari kulcha unlkike anything else.

and zilmil dhaba karnal has great paranthas as well :D

Try Crystal Palace near Railway Station and Brothers near Golden Temple for good food, especially Amritsaris Kulchas.

One more suggestion if you have a gps system nothing would beat it.
In case you dont and have a GPRS enabled fone (say N73) download a utility known as Google Maps. It works through GPRS and is precise to 1000 metres. Fair enough for no cost

I would suggest you to make it a week trip.

The Golden Temple - The temple is the most important sacred shrine for the Sikhs, who travel from all parts of the world to enjoy the blissful environments and offer their thanks by giving prayers. In addition, the sacred shrine is increasingly becoming a tourist attraction for visitors from all over the world. Here Sikhs from all over the world come to pay their reverence to Guru Granth Sahib and take a dip in the Amrit Saras Kund for spiritual purification, is the major landmark of the place. It was founded by the fourth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Ram Das. The Golden Temple is a two storey marble structure, with an imposing dome of pure gold. The original copy of the Granth Sahib, which is kept in the Golden Temple during the day, is ceremoniously returned to the Akal Takht, at night.

Jalianwala Bagh - It is a poignant memorial of the freedom movement. This garden commemorates the martyrs, keeping the tragic episode in its historical context. General Dyer, a British general ordered firings against innocent people on April 13, 1919, which took lives of over 2000 unarmed people. Today, this site of brutal massacre, encloses a memorial with an eternal flame, dedicated to the martyrs.


Durgiana Temple - Located outside the Lohagarh gate of the old city, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is a centre of pilgrimage for devout Hindus. Other attractions of the city are Baba Atal Rai Tower, Ram Bagh garden, Fatehabad Mosque, Tarn Taran, Harike Wetland Wildlife Sanctuary, Wagha Border.


Mata Mandir temple :- A grand old pious lady developed this Hindu temple situated at Rani ka Bagh, on the lines of holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi at Katra (Jammu), the temple draws crowds of devotees from far and near. Festivals are celebrated with great pomp and show. An evening visit to the temple gives an opportunity to the visitors to observe the life styles of Hindu families.


Ram Tirath Temple :- On the outskirts of Amritsar is this significant historic birthplace of Lav and Kush. It is the spot where sage Valmiki's ashram stood and this is a sacred place for the Hindus where we get a glimpse of statues illustrating scenes from the Ramayana.

List of places to eat:

Kesar Da Dhaba: Its situated in one of the Bylanes of the old amritsar city. The lanes are too narrow for a car to go inside. You may have to park it near "gurdwara Lohgarh Sahib " or "Katra Sher Singh" or near Golden Temple.
You may have trouble locating this place but its worth the effort.

Bhravan Da dhaba: Already mentioned elsewhere.

Crystal: Sizzlers here are good....

Chungi Da kulcha: Chungi translates into octroi. An old octroi post existed nearby. Hence the name.

Regent Talkies Chowk ki Lassi: Bestest lassi in amritsar.

Ahuja Sweets Lassi: Kesar lassi at its best.

Hall Bazaar ki Tikki and Kulfi: Aloo tikki and Faluda Kulfi.

Amritsari fried fish: Number of shops outside Hall Gate. As you belong to Kolkata you will relish these.

Ahuja k chhole bathure.

Brijwasi ki chat and Bun Tikki.

Crystal chowk : Softy. first oldest and the best softy shop in amritsar.

Do try out the fruit beer available at various "Verka Milk" Outlets.
