Do we need permission from the forest department to visit these places? If yes, can it be got on the spot?

And how many days will it be good staying in the resort?
You can drive upto Avalanche but you need a forest dept permit to go inside. Avalanche or emerald are truly magical places that many folks never get to when visiting Ooty!

Thanks for the information Mans Idea.

The roads are lot worse now thanks to rain, but nothing that can not be done in a Santro. You just need to be extra careful while driving through some of the puddles. It had rained just then when we went to the Parson's Valley dam and since there were potholes all around, we were not too sure how deep they were. My car did take a hit once. Mind you, we were 4 people in our car, well, 3.5 to speak.

This is one place where you do not want to be hurried and you just want to drive real slow. Even the faint sound of your car might disturb the pristine surroundings there!

Awesome pictures @mansidea! I am thinking of going to this vicinity this weekend. There are two resorts (that I know of) there - Destiny farmstay and Red Hills Nature Resort. Any idea about Destiny in comparison to RHNR?

For the dams, you dont need any permissions. You can drive till the point. Only for Upper Bhavani, you need permission fron Electricity Board.

@CivicSense,

If you are going this weekend, do check for bookings. Destiny is pretty famous amongst folks and gets full most of the time.

Both RHNR & Destiny seem to be available this weekend, probably because of this Saturday being a working day (hartal compensation) and with the World Cup finals happening.

Folks,

Though this is my first trip to Ooty, I am planning to goto Avalanche, Emerald & Western Catchment this weekend. I understand for Upper Bhavani & Western Catchment, we need forest dept. permission, but for others its easy go.

My understanding of sequence to see these places is as below. Please correct, if it is wrong.

Ooty Bus Stand->Fern Hill Palace->Emerald->Avalanche->Upper Bhavani.

Is that correct? Ofcourse, these are nice places to see/drive through, What other activities can be done there? In the sense, i mean is there a wild life safari to go or is there any Forest Dept. Reception who can guide the activities there?

Contact the proprietor/host Mr. Vijaykumar (assuming that you plan to stat in Red Hills nature resort):
vijay@redhill-india.com
0423-2595753
0423-2595755
RedHill

Vijaykumar should be able to guide you on permissions. Rates should be around Rs.2500-3000 per person per day - all inclusive.

RedHill

Check the site, the location is detailed here. Also, I think their rates are fixed. No separate rates for off season/valley view rooms etc.

I looked at Red Hill Nature Resort, Emerald, Nilgiris, Tamilnadu, there the tariff quoted is Rs.3000/person/day.

BTW, they are normally closed during monsoon.
