As others mention, I dont think you have to break. If you start from Chennai by 4AM, you would be in Bangalore outskirts by 9.
Add another 5-6 hours from there and you would in Waynad by afternoon. (4-5PM at max)

This is also possible as most part would be 4L.

planning to goto wayanad from chennai on may 1st weekend. Planning a stop over in bangalore or mysore depending on the travel time.
My question is if we start by 8:00 AM(not before that) from chennai, Will be able to reach Mysore by 5:00 PM? considering the road conditions till ranipet, blore. traffic etc..
Any alternate routes to consider?

I think this is doable with ample buffer. Approx: 8 AM start, a generous 11 AM at Ranipet interchange, 1 PM at Krishnagiri junction, 2.30 PM on NICE Road, 3 PM entering the brand new BMEW and with the most defensive driving, 4.30 PM exit at the Mysore end.

From Mysore MRR exit to KA-KL border via NH 766 will take about 90 mins, another 30 mins to cross the forest and enter Kerala - it is still only 7 PM. In another two hours you can reach any destination within Wayanad. No need to break the journey at Mysore either.

If you mean April 29. Budget an additional hour or 2, this being a long weekend and summer holidays.

A few years back I did Chennai - Wayanad in a slightly different route. Chennai-Krishnagiri - Dharmapuri - Mettur - Sathyamangalam - Chamrajnagar - Gundlupet - Bandipur - Bathery. Of course I had wanted to do this route specifically so that I can cover the Sathyamangalam Reserve Forest during the wee hours and reach Bandipur check post just before 6 AM to cross Bandipur forest during the morning hours. Took me 13 odd hours I think. Now with Dimbam ghats closed for the night this is no more possible.

For one end of the highway to another on Bangalore - Mysore section it takes around 1.5 hours only. Hence its better to stay at Mysore where you have more options of hotels.

There aren't any good hotels next to the highway as such.

This is our first time to Wayanad. I want to make sure if the roads from Chennai to Bangalore conditions via Ambur.

2 couples and a kid. Hence we want to make sure safer and better routes.

All 3 routes have their issues.

1) From Chennai till Ranipet, roads are going to be a bad with lots of diversions.

2) Between Ulundurpet and Salem, the 2 lane sections have cones placed between them preventing any overtaking of slow trucks. Road surface is not an issue

3) Coimbatore to Wayanad? You mean through Satyamangalam reserve or through Kozhikode? Not sure about the stretch through Satyamangalam - have heard that it sees regular blocks with not so great roads. Don't know the latest update. The Kozhikode route is simply too long IMO.

Your best bet is option 1 through Bangalore and Mysore. I will be using the same next week.

The roads after Palakkad are not great, additionally the local traffic will make your progress very slow so please avoid the option via Coimbatore. Your best bet is to go via Mysore. Depending on where you are starting I suggest take the Chennai - Tindivanam - Tiruvannamalai - Krishnagiri - Hosur - NICE Road - Mysore Highway - Mysore - Wayanad. This would ensure you avoid the bad stretch between Ranipet - Krishnagiri and ensure your drive is not stressful though it may add about 30 / 40 kms or so to the overall distance.

Have taken the Chennai Ulundurpet Salem Palakkad Manjeri Thamaraseri Wayanad today and continued till Madikeri via Manathavadi Kutta Gonikoppa. I took this route as I had to take the Darshan of Kalpati temple and Angadipuram Temple. If you don’t have any such temple visits there is absolutely no need to take the Coimbatore route. Stick to Chennai Nice Road Mysore Sultan Bathery to reach Wayanad.

Just stick to the Chennai - Vellore - Bangalore NICE road - Mysore Ring Road - Wayanad and you should be good.

The only problem section is the Chennai-Ranipet and even that is much better than what it was 3-4 months ago. The trick is to start early in the morning.

How is the Tindivanam - Tiruvannamalai stretch now? It used to be very bad.

As ironic as it sounds, it competes with Sriperumbudur-Vellore route (30 minutes slower) for Madras-Bangalore I had updated after Sankaranti here (Bangalore - Chennai - Bangalore : Route Queries).

There have been 2-3 bypass work completed since I wrote that
