I am planning to drive to Tarkarli beach (near Malvan in Maharashtra) from Mumbai in second week of Dec. 2008. Please let me know the convenient route (NH 17 or NH 4 up to Kolhapur). It will be very helpful if you could let me know the route and some nice stopovers for food on the way. I am planning to start about 5 AM. Thanks.

if you are going to malwan/tarkarli, i will suggest stick to nh17. monsoon is almost over. so no problem about flooding.
route as usual
mumbai-panvel-pen-mangaon-mahad-poladpur-bharne-chiplun-hathkhamba-rajapur-kankwali-kasal-right turn-malwan.
if you opt for route via kolhapur, then-
mumbai-pune-nh4-satara-kolhapur-radhanagari-phonda ghat-phonda-humbarat[ you will join nh17 at this place-left turn on nh17 to kankwali-kankwali-kasal-right turn-malwan.
if you are going by nh17, at mahad, there is vithal kamat restaurant.
after bharne phata, in the ghat to chiplun, do stop at lote parshuram.
chiplun has some nice hotels. try hotel abhishek.
after chiplun, at derwan, do stop to see shivsrushti.

A slight variation to what Ashish has suggested already - Kolhapur-Gaganbawda route. Mind you, I did this route last year. So dunno how is the road condition now.

NH17 can be a bit tiring unless you are an "involved" driver who enjoys driving thru the various twists and turns. NH4 is better if you need a straight and fast route.

if you are going from NH17 than do stop for lunch or breakfast at Ruchi beyond Nagothane on NH17 or Mangaon to a fast food joint very famous Balaram,good food same like SHIV SAGAR JOINTS of mUmbai.
Dont ezt at Kamat's at Nagothane bcos they dont serve quickly & food does not have quality too

What is the best route for PUNE To Tarkarli ?

As per google map the route is :

PUNE -> NH4 -> Satara -> Shiye -> Bhuye -> Gaganbavada -> Kankavali -> Malvan -> Tarkarli

Is this the correct route ?

Let the experts comment on the route - as far as stay is concerned, MTDC's Tarkarli resort is the best option

I have plans for Tarkarli (in the following month or so).
By reviews, I think MTDC Tarkarli OR Sea View Tarkarli resort are good options.
(btw, these are just decent places, nothing fancy).

I am also planning to explore the lesser known beaches nearby.
Like - Talashil Beach, Achara Sea Face.

Not many option in Tarkarli but the MTDC resort is bang on the sea shore and most ideally located. The beach itself is fantastic - one of the best beaches in Konkan.

We had a bad time there but friends who visited later said that they had a great time!!
