Is there a route from coimbatore to wayanad without going through ooty and gudalur , i would like not to go up hills although i realize that wayanad is also one ,
If i did go through palakad , do i have to go all the way to calicut and then go up or is there any other way up ...also how is the coimbatore to calicut road and the calicut to wayanad road?
thanks
coimbatore to calicut road is fine, except some bad stretchs between palakkad and mannaarkad.
cbe-palakkad-mannarkad-calicut-wayanad is the most straightforward. Some portions of it were being repaired/widened. The road is narrow in most places and passes through dense human habitation. do watch out for the maniacal bus drivers - ksrtc and private.
there was one shortcut from cbe to mannarkad via SH 164 - that takes a right onto perur road at CBE and heads to siruvani. The last time I tried this route, it was closed by the forest guys right at the end - at Siruvani.
Do we know the latest on SH-164 between TN and Kerala? I was stopped at before Siruvani last September as well. So when do they open it up or does it ever open? Is it political?
Hi guys,
I have my queries here
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...ns-please.html
There is a slight change, and am looking for route directions from Sultan Battery to Palakkad. Is the following route ok? :
Sultan Battery-Pandalur-Munderi (via Up and Cape road)-Pothuckal-Chungathara-Nilambur-Vadapuram-Wandoor-Pandikkad-Pattikad-Angadipuram (Join NH213 to Palakkad here).
If anyone can advise on viability of this route and road conditions, will be of great help.

Instead of Wandoor you can try the route through Kalikavu. Very scenic and nice. About the Nilambur to Sultan Bathery route, I have not driven. I remember HVK mentioning its OK and goes through many tea gardens.
Please confirm for that stretch.
I'm planning on a drive from Coimbatore to Wayanad in August. Any info on the best route and current road condition will be of great help.

I would say the best option would be to take the NH209 towards Bangalore.
Drive till Chamarajanagar, divert to Gundlupet and the take the NH212 to Kalpetta/Batheri.
The shortest route ideally would be through Kerala. But in August, since I can't comment on the
monsoon condition, I think the best option would be via Chamarajanagar.

Second Ampere in the choice of route. Via Chamarajanagar / Gundlupet would probably be the fastest. Shouldn't take you more than 5 hours for the 250 kms or so till Kalpetta.
The shortest route would probably be the one via Ooty (slightly above 200 kms). But that would certainly take longer since you need to climb upto Ooty and then climb down, so lot of hill driving. Add to it the heavy traffic you're likely to encounter on the CBE-Ooty route.
Going via Kerala would be 20 to 25 kms shorter than the Chamarajanagar route, but Considering the current poor state of NH47 on the CBE-Walayar sector and the heavy traffic you'd see on Kerala roads, I'd think taking the longer road via Sathy-Chamarajanagar-Gundlupet-Batheri would be a better option.
Thanks a lot ampere and kala!
There won't be any harm in going via Ooty and Gudalur as well if you enjoy driving on the Ghats. I personally would prefer to take Ooty route if I were to go to Wayanad from Coimbatore.
Thx. Ramesh. Planning on PepperGreen. So need your feedback on it after your visit!

The first 3 hours of traffic from CBE to Conoor and Ooty (via Mettupalayam) is a big dampner. Beyond that its OK. In this case then he
need go to not Gundlupet. He can do Gudalur-Meppadi-Kalpetta. (If Kalpetta is the destination)

Right. But, for CBE-Ooty itself, I would prefer to do Cbe-Annur-Mettupalayam-Kotagiri-Ooty. It will have less traffic than the Coonoor route.
That is exactly the route I always take for cbe-ooty! Good roads, less traffic and real driving pleasure.
