Dehradun-Where? for 6 days ?

Have a cousin's wedding in D'dun on the 13th of April - will be able to leave by the 14th lunchtime and plan to take the Rajdhani to Bangalore around 8:30pm on the 20th. What do we do in the interim ? There's the 4 of us (kids are 7, and 4 yrs old).

Did Kumaon and Garhwal the last year around the same time, so thats out.

One option was a faimly trip on the 14-15 to Chakrata - then carry on to Sangla via Rohru-Rampur. Stay there (Kalpa/Sangla) for a couple of days and drive back to Shimla, and then to Delhi after a days break.

How far is Sangla from Chakrata via this route ? Doable in a day ? Vehicle - probably a rented cab with a driver - will an Indica do the trip ?

Alternative suggestions gladly welcome Not sure how fat Dharamshala-Khajjiar etc are - thats the other option if we return via Chandigarh.

Yep - Mussoorie - seen it too many times. Its like a Doon suburb, more or less
Also - have been dying to go spend more time in Kinnaur. Just not sure if the distances/roads are doable in that much time. On possibility is to go towards Shimla from there and do the usual touristy stuff around there. Mid April it may not be that crowded, in any case. But thats the worst case scenario, honestly.

You can go to Rohru, only 160 km away & visit Chirgaon, Shimla is also not far -off.

Infact, if you have 3 days, You can do Sarahan , may be Sangla but that will leave you too tired.

Day 1 : Dehradun - Rohru - 5 hours drive: Visit Chirgaon, Walks around Pabbar river

Day 2 : Rohru - Nogli - Rampur -Sarahan - Again 4/5 hours drive; Visit Bhimkali temple & Pheasontary; Stay at HPTDC Shrikand hotel

Day 3 : Sarahan - Narkanda - Rohru - Dehradun ( you can come via Narkanda). Start early from Sarahan.

OR just explore around Rohru, at Jubbal , you can visit an old palace.

EDIT : Sorry, didn't read the thread title & your post throughly, as you have 6 days, there are many possibilities

If you want to Visit Dharmsala, Palampur. It is better to go via Chandigarh - Una - Kangra - Dharmsala

alternatively, Dehradun - Jubbal - Theog - Shimla - Hamirpur - Kangra - Dharmsala

You can Stay ( base station) at Dharmsala for 3 - 4 days & visit Mcleodgunj, Palampur, Baijnath, lot of temples around Kangra, Chamunda, Jwala ji.

@breezydrive Thanks a lot! Yes, I have some 6 days in all before we get to Delhi.
From your time estimates I'm guessing Sarahan is about 300kms or less from D'dun via this route - which makes me think Sangla is possible too in 2 days.

14th aftnoon - to Rohru - 6hrs ? (kms?)
15th Rohru-Sangla 8hrs ? Or to Sarahan
16th : Sarahan-Sangla
18th aftnoon Sangla-Shimla
20th Morning Shimla-Delhi (7 hrs?)

Doable ?

Sangla is definately doable. First day(14th) go upto Chakrata, spend a night and on 15th go till Sarahan and stay there. Next day(16th) go to Sangla and stay at Chitkul (the road head). Spend another day there(17th). 18th start from Sangla in the afternoon and come and stay at Rampur. 19th drive till Chandigarh, 20th you are in delhi.

Thanks Wandernomad - thats a good plan. Have an extra day now (train from Delhi on the 21st instead) so will add a Shimla stopover.
14th - Chakrata/Rohru - which is better ?
15th - Sarahan
16th - Sangla/Chitkul (acco ? We were looking at the Kinner Camp - pricey but with kids not sure of other options)
17th - Sangla
18th - aftnoon - to Narkanda ?
19th - aftnoon to Shimla
20th - Shimla
21st - Delhi

Or perhaps, hang around at Kalpa/Peo for a day more, and just one evening at Shimla. Given the time of the year, am assuming reservations will not be a big issue except at the Sangla camp.

Any first hand experience of the camps there ?

Camps at Sangla are good and comfortable. Checked them once a long time back.
There is a rest house at Chitkul. 2 rooms only but if you can be very persuasive I think you can get them. Rates for non govt are around 350 per day per room or roundabout. Location is excellent.
Between Chakrata/Rohru Ill prefer a stop over at Chakrata as it will give you time to walk around. Reaching Rohru will not let you have that luxury. Moreover you can have a Tea pit stop there the next day.
Narkanda is not worth especially if you have been to Chakrata and Sangla so come over to Rampur and visit the royal pallace and enjoy the satluj.
kalpa/peo will be too exerting and will take away the leisure pace from your itineary.
You are having only one evening at simla as it is.

@wandernomads - thanks. This is the one I'm considering : Kinner camps
Have stayed over at Rampur earlier and seen the Palace so wanted to stay someplace else on the return. Narkanda no good? Kufri, perhaps...or Chail. Another option is to drive over Jalori (if open in April) and return via Kullu.
@deky, will be staying pretty close the IMA, and one of my cousin's graduated from there a while ago. Thanks

Drive over Jalori would be a pain and stressful. If you got time then drive to Karsog, a very beautiful hamlet. Stay there instead of Rampur and enroute you can also see the hot springs at Tattapani (though nothing much to write about them). You can then return either through Sundernagar-Swarghat-Anandpur Sahib-Chandigarh route or take the Karsog- Shimla route. If you are interested in this route let me know Ill check out the latest route conditions and the shortcuts available.

Explore around & stay at Kinner kailash -HPTDC Kalpa

17th - Sangla
18th - aftnoon - to Narkanda ?
Spend two days ( 17 & 18) at Kinner camp/ Sangla as planned earlier

19th - aftnoon to Shimla
Morning to Sarahan & stay at Sarahan/ Narkanda - The HATU, HPTDC

20th - Shimla

@breezy - awesome! That sounds perfect. Who needs travel sites when TBhp has such amazing first hand knowhow
Qn : Kalpa-Sangla is far ? I had a feeling both were more or less the same place (we'd bypassed these on our way to Kaza and from there to Leh)

Kalpa Sangla is about 2.5 hrs. Kalpa is beyond RekongPeo while Sangla is from Karcham.

Given the lousy snowfall last winter and the water scarcity, have canceled the trip plans.

Need info on getting to Meerut from Delhi - we were planning to get to ISBT and take a bus etc. How much do taxis charge ?
