MillionSwords, you are planing a long drive

From Bangalore you can go via Hassan instead of Tumkur unless you have some other plans...

From Mangalore onwards its pretty easy 1 road and you have plenty of places to see in between..

Bangalore - Nelamangala -Hassana - Sakleshpura - Mangalore- Udupi - Kundapura - Murdeshwara - Gokarna- Karwara - Goa

Hi,

I did the Chennai - Goa trip on road with wife and kid - driving alone all the way up and down. Our trip went this way.

1. DAY 1: Left Chennai in the afternoon and reached Bangalore and halted for the night.
2. DAY 2: Left Blore to get on the Hassan highway and first stop was at SHRAVANABELAGOLA; moved on to Hassan for lunch and thereafter we went to Belur and then Halibed. ( going in that direction these are not-to-be missed spots). From there we reached Mangalore for the night via Sakleshpur. The ride was pretty good all along except for the brief ghat stretch after Sakleshpur where we got caught in a traffic jam caused by the oil tankers coming from Mlore refinery to Blore.
3. DAY 3: We left Mangalore and the first halt was at Udipi temple, and then we moved on to reach Mookambikai and cruised on the konkan coast with a brief stop at Karwar and then onward to Goa.

We stayed in Goa for about 3 days and on our return we came back to Karwar; took the Karwar - Hubli highway ( a great road to drive) and reached Hubli for lunch - and finally to Bangalore where we halted for the night and got back to Chennai the next day.

I wanted to do the Hampi bit - but couldnt make it though. All in all I think the drive was great; the konkan coast was simply beautiful to drive where you cross all the backwaters with beaches by the side - and as you enter Goa State the ride becomes even more memorable with beaches and ghats on both sides of the road until you hit Panjim - you may want to check the road condition now (i think I saw some posting on this at TBHP forum).

I am sure you will enjoy the drive - BTW what car are you driving - we did this in my Tata Safari.

Cheers
Ram

Hi I suggest the following route

Chennai - Bangalore - Shravanabelagola - Hasan - Belur - Halebidu - Sakleshpura - Mangalore - Udipi - Kundapura - Maravanthe beach - Murudeshwar Beach - Gokarn - Ankola/Karwar - Goa or Dandeli - Hubli - Haveri - Hampi - Bellary - Anantapur - madanapalle - Chitoor

i agree with lohitrao, it is a long route, you must have a good/well maintained car and good planning.

Great - so that is some not so crazy Idea then - some one has done it before, and he goes by the same name as mine LOL.

I'm not planning anything immediate or not.
Might do it in a LoganR or my little Estilo, or never know which one.

I just have this idea, and I do not know whom to go with, have vague ideas and will start asking friends about it, who ever is interested will join me for the heck thrill of it. Plan to take sleeping bags, retire on the beach side for the night, camp away and wash in the sea, bathe in the nearest river or waterfalls!! [no lodging unless situation forces].

It will be a backpack type of run, and a lot of fun, so Im keeping the options open, and will see how it works out.

[a roll of 6 x 3 foam mat will do if a sleeping bag is not available, with a bed sheet to cover]

Well I'm interested in Halibedu side temples but HAMPI is my dream, have to photograph Hampi during the monsoons, so this drive will be kept for monsoons or after monsoons.

Any TBhpians from Chennai/Bangalore/Mysore/Mangalore wants to join can keep this thread a joint and discuss further.

[@ram - please add any useful information, tips and points of interest on the way, and your photos from the trip will help us get motivated]

Chennai-Kollur-Mangalore-Chennai

I;m planning to do a long trip in my new Maruti 800 with my family to Kollur and then on my return trip via Mangalore and back to Chennai.

Is it wise to take my new M800 for such a long distance and will it suit the road conditions?

Please help me out with some information like Places to stay, road conditions, approximate distance etc.

Whatever "lohitrao" and "Star" have told is a good route and you will cover all the places. Have a safe journey and inspect your car in a service station before the start of the journey

Absolutely. The M800 would easily do these distances.Dont overload the car thats all.I am a proud owner of a m800 beauty and have done close to 55k in 2 years all over the country.so go ahead and enjoy the drives.stick to day time drives and maintain air pressure in the tyres and the car would treat you well.always tank up at half tank mark to avoid last minute tensions of finding a fuel station.Just a few pointers thats all, otherwise it should be an easy and enjoyable drive.

You could do an afternoon start from Chennai and reach Blore via Chittoor-Kolar.Stay the night at Blore.

Next day morning leave for Mangalore and stay the night at Mangalore.

Next day morning leave for Kollur via Udupi-Kundapur.Mlore-Kollur temple would take around 3hours.Target to reach Kollur by 9am.You could leave back to Mangalore by 3-4pm(latest).Facilities in and around the temple at Kollur are very minimal to the point of being non-existent.I usually do Kollur as a day trip from Mangalore as accomodation etc are better at Mangalore..Mangalore has many hotels depending on your budget.

Deepan: After visiting Shravana Belagola, you have scheduled to go to Shimoga. But, if you have time, you can visit Belur and Halebeedu near Hassan.

Be careful few km before and after serial number 31 at NH 4, where you will be taking left turn to reach NH 48. A lot of grade separator, road-widening/improvement works are in progress. A lot of big and crude speed-breakers/humps/bumps are also there apart from deviations with craters.

Slight corrections here.
Vittal Mallya Rd has been closed just after Shell petrol bunk till coffeday square for repair/renovation.
Madras bank road is one way
Please check the map, your route is bit confusing for me.

Hi Deepan,

Have you any information on the road conditions? I was planning to do Chennai - Hassan - Jog Falls - Gokarna - Udipi - Madikeri - Bangalore - Chennai during the last week of December. A few friends from Karnataka told me to avoid the coastal road, esp. the Karwar - Mangalore section. I believe there is no road in many places. In fact, I spoke to a hotel guy at Murudeshwar and he also said that the road was pretty bad. Reluctantly, I have changed my route to Chennai - Hassan - Jog Falls - Murudeshwar - Hampi - Bangalore - Chennai, keeping the coastal drive to a minimum.

Cheers,
Ssbiitm

Re: Chennai > Bangalore > Mangalore > Udipi > Karwar > Goa > Gadag > Hampi > Chittor

Hi,
What is the best route one can take from Chennai to Goa and back? The route needs to be the fastest one to reach as we have 5 days time including the to and fro travelling. Thanks in advance
