Chennai-Tiruvallur-Tirutanni-Renigunta-Tirupati

It's hardly a 3 hour drive (170kms), so you can drive non-stop, I guess

Chennai - Gumdipoondi - Tada - Kalahasthi - Thirupati

Aprox 155Kms - Roads are awesome. Just did a trip last Friday and I covered the distance in 2hours 15 minutes. Started at 5.45 A.M and reached by 8.15 A.M in Thirupati. Please plan in such a way that you reach the base of the hill couple of hours before darshan time as all vehicles have to under go a security check and if there is a crowd will take more time.

Roads till Tada is 4 lane - awesome roads
Tada - Kalahasti is single road but the roads are freshly laid apart from a couple of stretches. Just be careful for unmarked speed breakers near villages.
Kalahasti - Tirupati is 2 lane and good roads

I would suggest this route than the Thiruvallur route
