What is the route from Kolhapur to Srisailam?

Dear friends,

I wish to go to Srisailam from Kolhapur some time this month. I tried to google and found some map on yahoo showing a route going from Kolhapur to Bijapur via Athni and further on to Srisailam through a place called Mahbubnagar. I was wondering if anyone on Team-BHP has already been on this road. I am not too confident because the directions by the side of the map listed all state highways barring NH-13 for a short distance. Could anyone guide me?

Regards

The best option would be cross over to Solapur. From Solapur head towards Hyderabad on NH-9.The road is in excellent condition and Solapur-Hyd can be covered in 5hours.

Hyd-Srisailam is 5hours.From Miyapur(Hyderabad outskirts) take a right onto the old Bombay Road(its also called the ring road) and head towards Gachibowli. At Gachibowli take a right onto the new Rajiv Gandhi Outer Ring Road to Shamshabad Airport.Go past the airport and the road ends on Srisailam higway. At the highway, take a right to Srisailam. From thereon the roads are well marked.

There is also a diversion much before Miyapur.A turn off to your right would come up.That road connects to NH-7(Hyd-Blr Highway).Once you reach NH-7 take a left towards hyderabad and keep going till you see the Hyd Airport flyover.Take the flyover and go towards the airport and go past the airport and connect to the Srisailam highway.Other TBHPians would be able to comment on this turnoff.

Please note that the Forest stretch through Nallamala is closed for traffic from Night 9pm to morning 6pm.So time your drive accordingly.

Dear Ranjit,

Thanks a lot for the guidance offered but I'm a bit scared about the Kolhapur - Sholapur state highway. I've driven on it many times till Sangli and I've always found it horrible. For the amount of load this road carries, it should have been 4-lane ages ago but the daily passengers would not like to pay toll. This is what one of the taxi drivers in Kolhapur told me. So, I'll welcome any alternative routes to hit the Sholapur-Hyderabad road avoiding the Kolhapur-Sholapur MSH-3 completely

Regards

Hey Ranjit,

Thanks a lot for the link. It seems to me that the Kolhapur-Nippani-Chikkodi-Athni-Bijapur road is a good option for me. After that, I'm still a bit confused on how to proceed ahead to Srisailam.

We have not seen any travelgoues between Bijapur and Mehboobnagar, though that may be the shortest route.
I suggest you go to Gulbarga via Jevargi and then proceed to Homnabad from Gulbarga. At Homnabad you will touch NH9 (the same Solapur to Hyd road), so take a right and proceed to Hyderabad---Hyd is around 140 kms from Homnabad.
From Hyd, please follow the route Ranjit suggested.
For info on the road from Homnabad to Bijapur, see Zappo's travelogue to Goa from Hyd---it was a year ago.

Yes, I looked at Zappo's travelogue and that helped me decide on the Nippani-Chikkodi-Athni-Bijapur bit as the feedback from him is good. But I was just wondering if it so good on the state highway from Gulbarga to Bijapur and then from there to Athni and Chikkodi, then it could also be pretty nice from Bijapur to Mahbubnagar. But this is definitely a presumption and Zappo did not touch this route at all. One more thing on my mind was that people visiting Mantralayam from Bijapur must also be using the Mahbubnagar route but again there is no basis for this assumption either as I haven't heard the same from other people.

Hello Akadian,
Agreed that there is extremelly heavy traffic on Kolhpaur-Sangli road. However, once we turn towards Meeraj on the way to Solapur, the roads are good, especially via Pandharpur.
Hope this helps.

Hi guys,

I've got a new inspiration and am planning to use NH-4 till Hubli and then go via Gadag to Sindhnur. From there to Beechupalli, Achempet and then reach the destination. On the way, can see Mantralayam as well

Dear friends,

The trip has taken place and I would like to update the route followed by me. Day one, Kolhapur - Miraj - Solapur - Hyderabad - Jadcherla

Day 2, Jadcherla - Achempet - Srisailam - Dornal - Atmakur - Kurnool - Kodumur - Mantralayam

Day 3, via autos and basket-like boats, Mantralayam - Madhavaram - Across the Tungabhadra - Panchamukhi temple in Ganadal and back

Day 4, Mantralayam - Yemmiganur - Adoni - Bellary - Hospet - Gadag - Hubli - Belgaum and Kolhapur

I shall be posting a travelogue with pics this time

Regards

I think Day 1 stay should be either at Hyderabad or Mahbubnagar which is 14kms from Jadcherla. Jadcherla does not have good accomodation facilities. When you are coming from Sholapur after crossing a place called Sangareddy you will reach Kandi from there you can bypass Hyderabad and reach Shadnagar and then Jadcherla in case you want to skip coming into Hyderabad.
Day 4 instead of going through Adoni and Bellary you can come to Raichur about25kms from Mantralayam then take the route Manvi- Sindanur -Gangavathi-Koppal-Gadag this route has good roads.Sorry if am late in posting as i saw the thread today.

Hi Gajadonga,

I'm in agreement with all your points. I had reasons to do what I did. I had some business in Hyderabad and could not have thought of by-passing it. Still the information provided by you is solid and could come in handy some other time. About Jadcherla, I can't be more in agreement as the place where I put up for the night was one of the worst ever. Day 4, I had the Raichur route in mind but the bridge across the Tungabhadra has been destroyed by the floods and as far as I know, there is no short route connecting Mantralayam to Raichur by road at the moment.

Thanks for the inputs

Akadian, very useful route info.
What was the condition of teh roads, especilaly because of teh heavy rains in teh region?
Especially the route via Bellary (NH63), Kurnool-Mantralayam and Adoni-Bellary.
Any reason why you did not take the direct state highway to Srisailam from H'Bad?

Dear Kumar,

I never knew about the direct highway from Hyd to Srisailam. That is the reason I went via Jadcherla and Achempet.

The road conditions were horrible in many stretches as you rightly point out. Adoni to Bellary and Bellary to Hospet were nightmare stretches. The mining trucks have left there stamp all over these roads. The NH-63 suddenly improves between Koppal and Gadag and then stays good till Hubli, where I left to head towards NH-4. Kurnool to Mantralayam is also not that great and should not be done after sunset as done by me.

Regards
