Ranjith took the Mysore Bangalore route and branched off somewhere to go directly to Tumkur. He said the road was pathetic (after getting off mysore - blore road) and was full of pot-holes.
I'd suggest take the mysore - hassan - shimoga - harihar - pune on the return if you intend to visit places in mysore.

Two months back, i suggested the above route for pune-ooty to my friend.
According to him, the road is really good with smooth surface.
The route is good for day travel and during night, it may be lonely.

AP, can you point this road on google maps? I did not get this.

I could think of following options (which I put down in separate thread for bypassing Bangalore)

Thanks Ampere. No specific reason to stay at Mysore, just wanted to vist The nearby places of interest. Can plan it as you said but I am planning to do this trip in the last week of sep / 1st week of october. Dussehera falls in the 3rd week and I am told that thats a very busy time in Mysore (I have actually been advised to avoid Dussehera times there) and thats why the staty earlier. Will check with Ranjit as well.

Dusherra is very big in Mysore. In fact even hotels are almost sold out. If it is not for Dusherra festivities that you want to visit Mysore, then yes can avoid that time.

Also if you intend to visit near by places while staying Mysore, that is also not possible. As most hill stations Ooty/Waynad/Coorg etc more 100-150 Km away from Mysore. By staying in Mysore what all you can visit?
- Places in Mysore:
* Zoo, Chamundi Hills, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary and Srinrangapatna (fort, temples and some Tipu's Artifacts)

- Places which you can do in a day and come back to Mysore:
Melkote, Pandavapura (For the drive and a temple on the hill top)

Re: Pune to Ooty (Feedback reqd on this route)

Hi All

Thanks to the great input on the forum - I have been able to finalize my winter drive which is as under:

Delhi - Jaipur bypass - NH 79/76 - Udaipur - Ahmedabad - Vadodara - Surat bypass - Shirdi - Pune - Belgaum - Goa

I now want to further squeeze in Ooty via Hubli so my query:

1. Kindly guide me as to how to do Hubli - Ooty - quickest route
2. Estimated travel time for a moderately quick driver
3. Preferred budget hotels in Ooty
4. How is Ooty weather conditions at this time of the year

Cheers!

- Hubi-Bangalore (NH4/ 5-6 hours)
- Bangalore-Mysore-Nanjangud-Gundlupet-Ooty (5-6 hours)

Route link

You get 4L till Mysore and then decent 2L NH212.

Sherlock is a good place to stay (3-4K), but very good views.
Ooty would be cold at these times. But I think no rains.

After Gudlupet, you hit a place called Theppakdu which is about 30km. Here you turn left to Masinagudi and Ooty would be about 30km.

But this 36 hairpin bend route is not recommended at night.

Hi Ampere

I believe this would be the 36 hairpin bends route you talked about - in case I want to avoid this climb what is the alternate route and in case I do take the alternate route can I drive by night

Beyond Theppakdu, you continue to Gudalur and there on to Ooty. That would be about 60km extra distance.
But be aware that beyond 9PM entry at Bandipur is closed. Bandipur is about 20 km from Gundlupet (about 250km from Bangalore)

Bangalore to Ooty via Masingudi takes about 5-6 hours.
The route via Gudalur should an 1-2 hour extra due winding roads (They are not steep though).

If you can time such a way that you break in Bangalore, that would ideal.

That sounds ideal as a route - as for the stop - as I would be coming in from Shirdi after darshan - I think I would be able to cover Hubli at best and try to take Hubli - Ooty next day - what say?
