Hi All,

I am planning to do a road trip around Christmas ( maybe a little late on the planning front ) from Bangalore to Kanyakumari via Madurai/Rameshwaram. In this regard, I am looking out for suggestions/tips around the following aspects :-

1) The route/iterinary that I have in mind as of now is :-
Day 1 : Bangalore - Salem - Madurai - Kanyakumari ( Halt in Kanyakumari )
Day 2 : Sight seeing in Kanyakumari
Day 3 : Kanyakumari - Rameshwaram ( via Tirunalveli - Sayalkudi - Keelakarai )
Day 4 : Rameshwaram - Madurai ( Temple visit in Madurai/Halt in Madurai )
Day 5 : Return to Bangalore

Is this iterinary too aggressive?

2) Road conditions for intended route?

3) Suggested places to stay at each of the respective places ( budget : 800-1000 per day )

4) Any must-visit places around Kanyakumari ( could look at extending my stay at Kanyakumari by a day ).

Road to Kanyakumari is good but for aome road-widening dislocation between Salem and Dindigul and between Madurai and Tirunelveli. Last 15 kms to Kanyakumari is also being widened.

The route via Kizhakarai is a terrible road, best avoided. It is better to go from Kanyakumari on NH45 and then via Aruppukottai to Rameswaram.

Rameswaram-Madurai road is OK with some minor bad sections.

Kanyakumari has lots of budget hotels.
Rameswaram has Hotel Royal Park and Hotel Tamil Nadu.

Kanyakumari is good for a day at best - Vivekanada Rock, Devi Temple, Gandhi Mandapam, the beach and the Suchindram Temple nearby (14 kms).

Thanks for the info. I guess you meant Keelakarai. Do you know how long would Kanyakumari to Rameshwaram ( via Aruppukottai ) would take?

Should take you 6-7 hours.
