Kannur to Chennai without touching Bangalore city limit
What is the best route to go to chennai without entering into Bangalore?
Your suggestions appreciated
Thanks
Coming from Hosur after reaching Electronics City, you will notice the NICE road overpass. Take this NICE road and you will reach SH 17 which leads towards Mysore. From then on, lookup the thread below for the latest road conditions.

The NICE road is very good and you should be able to do over 100 and bypass all the Bangalore traffic.

'coming from hosur' - you mean that the drive from Chennai?
I have the route from Kannur to Bangalore ( I was there during december 2009).
What I would like to know is that when coming from Mysore, where to
divert to take the NICE road which will lead to electronic city, then hosur and then to Chennai?

Nair Saab,
Recently my cousin has taken this route in his i10. Once you cross you "Wonderla" watch out for an overbridge crossing the road, this is NICE road. The bridge comes at Kengeri. There is a sign board to take this road in the left side towards Hosur. Unfortunately this road is closed at present due the ongoing protest by Devagowda. If you couldn't take the NICE road, please call me.
What about taking the regular Calicut - Malappuram - Palghat - Coimbathur road, which may be little longer, but roads are in good condition I belief. Comparing the Kerala - Karnataka border roads in the Bangalore route, this may be a better option.
Thanks
Rajesh
@Rajeshk
yes, Calicut-Malappuram-Palghat-coimbatore road route seems better but would like to know the difference in distance between going via this route and via mysore.
Do anyone have some rough idea?
Further to my above post, found from Map India, following route:
Calicut - Pulpetta (or Thirurangadi?) - Perinthalmanna - Mannarkad - Palakkad -
coimbatore - Erode - Dharmapuri - Tirupattur -Jolarpett - Ambur - Vellore - Kanchipuram - Sreeperumbudur - Chennai
Calicut- Coimbatore =186kms
Coimbatore = 496 kms
Any corrections please?
You don't need to go via Erode from Coimbatore. The best route is Coimbatore - Avinashi - Perundurai - Salem - Dharmapuri - Krishnagiri - Vellore - Chennai. Its about 490 kms

Thanks advise, meantime how is the road conditions in these routes?
Traffic would be heavy upto Avinashi. You have 4 laning work happening between Salem & Coimbatore hence at stretches you might have to take diversions but is still manageable. After Salem its 4 lane all the way upto Chennai

Thanks information,
Since I will be driving in the day time, any diversions etc will not be a problem (and ofcourse I can read /speek Tamil hence no problem in reading the signages/diversion boards etc):D
Finally, have decided to take the route via Mysore-Bangalore (NICE Road), Hosur - chennai.
Dropped the Calicut -Palakkad - coimbatore route as it will take atleast 3 hours for me to reach calicut (due to very narrow roads in mahe and congested roads in Thalassery), eventhough the distance is only about 132kms from my place.
Also understand there will be about 100kms or more if do this route than the mysore route.
Anyway my trip starts tomorrow early morning. Will report the route/road conditions
once back from chennai.
Nair Saab,
The Iritty - Makkutta road is temporarily opened till 25th Jan'10 (See the news in Hindu -
The Hindu : Karnataka / Madikeri News : Vehicles of devotees allowed on Konanur-Makutta road). If you take this route the drive to Bangalore will reduce minimum by 60KM (almost 2-3hours). From Thalipparamba, take the Srikandapuram - Irrity Road, and at Irrity instead of crossing the river, go straight to reach Kootupuzha. At Perumpadi take right turn to Gonikkuppa immediately after the check post..
I also heard that NICE road is open now.
Happy motoring, enjoy the drive..!!
Thanks
Rajesh
Thanks Rajesh
Yes, I have this option also in mind . Anyway will decide tomorrow morning as my cousin will be accompanying me who is well versed this iritty-virajpettah route.(ofcourse, this time I have the MMI GPS to guide the route -lets see how it works)

Nair Saab,
Hope you had a pleasant drive. If you had taken the Makkutta road, please update the status..
Thanks
Rajesh
Was the Irrity Virajpet road OK..?
I have seen a few of my friends returning back to Bangalore from Payyanur via Cherkala, Madikeri route avoiding Irityy, Virajpet route, two weeks before.
