Chennai to Madurai - Route & Rental Advice

6 of us colleagues need to travel to Madurai from Chennai this weekend to attend a wedding and are planning a road trip. Plan is to start Saturday morning to reach Madurai that evening Return to happen on Sunday afternoon after the wedding.

Please advice on best route to take that lets us make the best use of the weekend. If google is correct the distance is around 454 km - pls confirm and the amount of time the route would take with sedate driving - not rushed.

Also since none of us have a vehicle large enough are wanting to do a self drive rental of an Innova- any reccommendations for such companies in Chennai ? Please suggest.

Chennai - Tambaram - Chengalpattu - Dindivanam - Vilupuram - Ulunderpet - perambalur - Tiruchy. From tiruchy take the Viralimalai route and it will take straight to the Sivagangai - Rameswaram - Madurai(annanagar) junction signal.

From chennai to Tiruchy follow all the way in NH45 and fro Tiruchy to Madurai follow the NH45B.

I would suggest a early morning start fro Chennai say 4 or 5am. It should take 4-5hrs to Thiruchy and 3hrs to Madurai from there max.

MJothi's route is correct; take the Chennai bye-pass towards Tambaram, follow signs towards Trichy & towards Madurai only via NH45 (Chennai-Trichy) & NH45B(Trichy-Madurai). Roads are breeze & if you drive real good, you can reach Madurai by 10 hours.

Try this one. One of my friend had rented a Getz here for 2 days when he had planned for a trip, but did not get his car back from service.

Roads are really great. Even the mess at Trichy is completely removed & no need to get into trichy city. Hence one can account for 7 hrs (with stop and go drive)

Couple of boards were there indicating it as way to Madurai...there should not be any confusion as its a straight road.

Re: Chennai to Madurai - Route & Rental Advice

Will be taking the route mjothi mentioned, next month.
Chennai - Maudrai via Chengalpet, Tindivanam, Villupuram, Trichy and Madurai.

Silly question
We will probably leave Chennai by 5:30 - 6:00 in the morning. Are there any good breakfast places on the way? Any place around the 2-3 hour mark from Chennai, that will be open?

There are quite a few restaurants before Tindivanam. Hotel Highway Inn and Aarya Garden's should be open around 8 AM.
