I think its possible if you take all the required permissions, visa's etc. But is it under chinese rule, then permissions might be dicey.

Does it not need one to drive through China?

What is the route? I think it goes through Chinese mainland. Is it not?

Yes you're right @Ampere, it requires driving right through China or infact crossing the entire country as such.
Here're my thoughts that come when I think of driving through China. Well if one looks through Google satellite map, there's a huge portion of waste land stretching far west to J&K towards a little over Sikkim in the east. So how does one cross this region? Or does it require driving via Arunachal Pradesh in the far north east? Appreciate any details shared regarding this. Tks.

The huge wasteland stretching a little over sikkim is full of inaccessible mountain ranges which forms a part of Tibet which is chinese occupied. Guess you will have to drop plans of driving through china. Not sure about driving from Russia or Kazhaksthan.

HVK has done a lot of research on a India to UK drive. If he does that, I'm thinking of wrapping myself in his spare wheel!

For HVK it's a 7 rather 9 year itch I guess.

There's are some threads as well.
