Hi R-Six,

Within Goa roads are good, but a bit narrow. There's also a ghat section before reaching Palolem area, and there was some road work going on. After that until Karwar there were minor deviations. IIRC, Karwar to Ankola was very smooth. After that, until Honnavar roads themselves were decent but with quite a few speed breakers and some diversions - this section basically went through the town roads. You'll need to be careful in this section for foot and local traffic as well. But I guess it'll be about 9.00 by the time you reach here from Dabolim, so you may be ok.

Beyond Honnavar it's basically a good 2-lane or 4-lane highway. It should be a breeze. The closer you get to Mangalore higher the traffic. And even in the bigger towns like Suratkal I don't remember seeing any street lights along the highway, so watch for cross traffic. Also, there's no high divider to block high beams, and road is a bit curvy in this section, so be careful.

Have a safe trip.

Re: Goa to Mangalore : Route Queries

Hi, planning a Mumbai - Goa - Mysuru - (suggested stop) - Mumbai trip in the next 2 weeks.

Any latest updates on how are the road conditions. From Goa, should we go via Mangalore or through the Hubli - Tumkur route.

Re: Goa to Mangalore : Route Queries

Reports are that Goa - Mangalore is completely 4 lane toll Highway. Shouldn't take more than 5-7 hours once you exit GA.

About Mangalore - Mysore, look up the thread on Bangalore - Murudeshwar / Udupi / Kollur route query threads. threads.

The ideal route from Mangalore to Mysuru will be via Bisile ghat via Kushalanagar, Piriyapatna, and Hunsur.

Re: Goa to Mangalore : Route Queries

We went to Goa last weekend. I wanted to update route details and road condition. Onward journey was Mysore - Srirangapatna - Pandavpura - Melukote - CR Patna - Arsikere - Kadur - Tarikere - Shimoga - Sagara - Honnavar - Kumta - Karwar - Goa (Canacona)

Decision to take this route onward was because of the incessant rain in Dakshina Kannada and unknown road condition in Sampaje, Sullya, Puttur due to tremors and landslides. The Shimoga route was suggested by a Coorgi friend, in case of night driving. We (my wife, two of our friends and myself) left from Mysore in our VW Taigun 1.0 TSI MT at 7pm and reached Goa at 6am with a dinner stop at CR Patna.

Roads between Mysore to Srirangapatna are a mix of good stretches and yet to be made patches due to ongoing expressway construction. After that till Jaknahalli (Melukote), the road is good. From Melukote to Shravanabelagola, roads are very narrow surrounded by dense vegetation with many tough patches.

Finding a place for Dinner at CR Patna was challenging and we repented not having carried food from Mysore itself. Immediately after crossing the Bangalore - Mangalore highway onto Arsikere road, it worsens a lot. The road all the way upto Shimoga is in a very bad state. Average speed was less than 60kmph for most part of it. After Shimoga the roads are very good and well marked all the way upto Kumta

Between Kumta and Karnataka-Goa border road widening is still underway, so there are a few bad patches to look out for. You have to be especially careful in the section since the road shifts between single carriageway and double carriageway frequently without warning.

On the return leg took the decision of sticking to my usual route that I was well versed with after speaking to the Coorgi friend Dr. KCK who confirmed that rain had reduced and there was no waterlogging.

Route taken was Goa (Agonda) - Karwar - Kumta - Honnawar - Bhatkal - Maravanthe - Kundapur - Udupi - Mangalore - Bantwal - Puttur - Sullia - Sampaje - Madikeri - Kushalnagar - Periyapatna - Hunsur - Mysore. Departed Goa after breakfast at Treetop Tava, Agonda at 11am and reached Mysore at 11.30pm with a break at Mangalore for 1.5 hours and a 15minute stop at Maravanthe.

The roads were great throughout except some patches of rough roads between Mangalore to Adyar and some patches where road widening is underway till Bantwal. Post this roads were really awesome, super smooth all the way to Mysore. Really applaudable that despite the rains the roads were in great shape. No landslides anyway all the way upto two spots in the vicinity of Madekeri. One was at a place 14km away from Madikeri and the other at 5.5km from Madikeri in the Madikeri-Mekeri road (this diversion has to be taken due to the recent breach of the retaining wall adjacent to Madikeri DC office at the start of the Mangalore road from Madikeri just after the petrol pump at this circle. Really pity of the KSRTC Airavat buses having to take this narrow stretch upto Thalatmane.

I will take this route to Goa anyday compared to the one through shimoga just to avoid the section between CR patna to Shimoga especially if driving at Night. Between Tarikere and Shimoga, there are many spots with multiple speedbreakers (more than 10 together) which have no warning signs, this adds to the discomfort waking up the other occupants each time I missed noticing these in advance. Only after Shimoga, did the wife and our friends have good sleep, after that they woke up when i stopped for a coffee break near Jog falls diversion and after that they again could sleep comfortably till Karwar.

Whether driving in the morning or night time, I would recommend driving through Madikeri - Mangalore route if there is no waterlogging and if you don't own a Mahindra Thar or Isuzu V cross or any other proper SUV for getting past waterlogged areas safely.

Re: Goa to Mangalore : Route Queries

Hi guys, not sure if this is the correct thread for my search for assistance. Mods request your kind help in redirecting the posts to a more relevant thread so as to get replies, those that could be helpful.

In the last week of December I plan to drive from Mumbai to Wyanad and back. I’ll be stopping at my place in Pune and picking up our friend in Porvorim, Goa. After staying at her place for two nights we 3 will head out on the drive towards Wyanad with a night halt planned for Mangalore enroute

My post and questions are concerning the drive from Mangalore to Wayanad and on the return via Madikeri for a night towards Siolim Goa
Which is the best route to take from Mangalore towards Wayanad in terms of Road conditions, traffic, ghat difficulty
Similarly the best route from Wyanad to Madikeri and then Madikeri to Siolim, Goa. I need to be present in Siolim for a book launch party for a book on Goa written by my Sister-in-law. So what is the ideal time to drive out from Madikeri to reach North Goa by 730/8pm at the latest. At both Wayanad and Madikeri I’ll be staying at the Club Mahindra resorts there. Any tips on those would be welcome too

Looking forward to inspiration from my friends on this group. Thanks all in advance

Hi Everyone, planning to travel from Karwar to Mangalore tomorrow. Is there any good restaurants along the highway without going inside city?

Re: Goa to Mangalore : Route Queries

Earlier this month I drove from Udupi to Goa (Siridao) and back. A quick update on NH66 status.

* Udupi till Bhatkal (excluded) the road redevelopment into 4-lanes, dual carriageway is completed (at least, for this phase. There are any number of junctions that ought to be flyovers).

* From Bhatkal onwards most town bypasses are not done. Bhatkal, Honnavar, Kumta, Ankola.

* Kumta's is the longest undone stretch - from south of the town to beyond the Aghanashini bridge.

* Some longish sections between Ankola and Karwar also - mainly near the naval base.

* On the plus side, Karwar entry (the two tunnels) and bypass are all completed.

* Everything ends once you cross into Goa. The only dual carriageway section till Madgaon is the Canacona bypass.

* The Karmal ghat section was particularly problematic, because they were doing some drainage work also (one side of the road was dug up).

* Madgaon bypass is half-existent, so you have to enter the city for the remaining half. Once you negotiate that and hit the bypass it is a good, at times 8 or more lane road till beyond the Zuari bridge.

(On our return we took a detour to Kollur. About 35 mins from Byndoor which is the quickest I've done the temple town).

Did you make this trip? I’m planning one on a similar route, but from Goa, I’ll proceed towards kochi and would love to hear your experience on the road conditions.

I don’t have a 4x4, so please do let me know if there are crater filled sections that would need one, and I can avoid the route or the trip

Kali River bridge collapses near Karwar

Quote:
The 40 year old bridge across river Kali connects Goa and Karnataka

Karwar: In a shocking incident, the old Kali bridge which connects Sadashivgad with Karwar on National Highway 66 collapsed, leaving one person injured. However, there are no other casualties.
Quote:
"The Chittakula Police Station night patrolling men noticed the collapsed bridge and alerted the control room. There was a truck in the river and the injured man was on top of it. The local fishermen rescued the person identified as Bala Murugan of Tamil Nadu. He is presently admitted in Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital," Narayan SP Uttara Kannada told Express.
"The traffic has been stopped on the highway and a diversion route has been suggested," he said.

Used to be a pleasant drive, great highway, now these diversions.
