Hi all,
I am in the initial stages of planning a road trip for my December holidays.

The plan is to start around 15th-16th December from Thane and head on to Udaipur spend the next day there sightseeing then move on to Jaipur and do sighseeing+shopping there for a day from there head to Bharatpur bird sanctuary and spend maybe a day & a half there before proceeding to delhi.

In Delhi I plan to stay for about 3 days and maybe venture up north to encounter snow near shimla or someplace. This last part of whether to proceed to shimla or not has not been decided yet and still working out the logistics.

Gurus here can please help me plan the itinerary
few querries though
does it make sense to go to Jodhpur also if I am doing Udaipur and Jaipur too. (Is there anything special that i would not get to see in Udaipur or Jaipur apart from the fort) please dont :deadhorse me

Is the time right to see as many birds in december at Bharatpur?

You could check this thread for updates.http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...rip-query.html

At the outset, be warned that you will encounter heavy fog all over North India during the time you travel.

Well, if you have seen Udaipur and , you can say you have got the essence of Rajasthan and I would not be too keen on going to Jodhpur.

I would work on a route plan that goes as follows:
Bombay-Udaipur-Jaipur-Bharatpur-Agra-Delhi.

Of the North Indian hill stations - Musoorie, Nainital, Shimla, Manali, Dalhousie - I like Dalhousie and Nainital the most, but your chances of seeing snow are maximised in Dalhousie and Manali.

Normally, winter is the best season for bird-watching at Bharatpur.

Suggest go through these travelogues of mine. It may be of some help.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...r-gurgaon.html (Gurgaon - Jaisalmer - Jodhpur - Bikaner - Gurgaon)

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...r-gurgaon.html (Gurgaon - Sambhar Lake - Ajmer - Jodhpur - Gurgaon)

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...n-jodhpur.html (Gurgaon - Jodhpur)

RTDC Moomal at Jaisalmer, Ghoomer at Jodhpur & Kajri at Udaipur are good places to stay in.

You've not included Jaisalmer. The sand dunes and the famous sunset. Instead of SAM go to Khuri dunes. Better & clean place, serene too. SAM has become very commercialised and dirty.

Birds visit the Bharatpur sanctuary in winters from Siberia. It shall be full of birds & if you are lucky the Indian Python that would come out sometimes to sunbathe.

I would differ with this. Every city of Rajasthan has its own flavour & culture. You've to visit to experience this.

Entirely agree, but for someone with a larger itinerary and limited time, a bit here and there may be the only option. I also suggested dropping Jodhpur also because he can then take the direct road from Udaipur to Jaipur via Chittorgarh and Bhilwara. Maybe he can do it on the way back.

schitre05, another idea for you would be to do a magnum opus:
Bombay-Udaipur-Jodhpur-Jaisalmer-Bikaner-Amritsar-Dalhousie-Delhi-Agra-Bharatpur-Jaipur-Udaipur-Bombay.

Thanks Kumar, I have a limited number of days and want to cover as much variety in that time.

@ GD & Ranjit I would surely go through the logs Thanks!!

I have been to Jodhpur and done Jaisalmer too in the past but that was when i was single, and that was the reason I asked the question about Jodhpur @ kumar sir you were absoultely spot on about the route I had in mind, Thane-Udaipur-Jaipur-Bharatpur-Delhi.

Agra I want to avoid this time as rightly pointed by you about the fog scenario, Last time I went to see the TAJ MAHAL I had to wait for almost 2 hours just to get a slight glimpse of it even after standing bang in front of it, such dense was the fog.

This time I am taking my family (wife and 4 yr old) along and would like to cover as much variety.

Ahaa Dalhousie, now that is a good thought let me work on it, In the meanwhile if all could just help with comfortable budget hotels to stay at, Udaipur, Jaipur & Bharatpur. Delhi stay is taken care of, need to check dalhousie too.
Thanks

RTDC in Udaipur.
RTDC in Jaipur too, they have 2-3 properties.
Dalhousie - nothing better than HPTDC.

To go to Dalhousie, you can take the Delhi-Ambala-Ludhiana-Jalandhar-Pathankot-Dalhousie route on onward and return via Amb-Anandpur-Ambala on return.

Ok here goes the updated plan

Day 1: Thane to Udaipur

Day 2: Leisure at Udaipur

Day 3: Drive to Ajmer-e-sharif-visit the dargah, lunch and then drive to Jaipur on the same day. ( now is it possible to visit the dargah and drive to jaipur on the same day how much time does it take normally considering that this might be on a sunday?)

Day 4: Leisure at Jaipur

Day 5: Drive to Bharatpur visit the sanctuary stay overnight

Day 6: After early morning safari & breakfast leave for Agra visit the taj stay overnight.

Day 7 : Morning visit to the Taj and drive to New Delhi.

Day 8 & Day 9 in New Delhi.

Day 10 : Leave for Mumbai

Day 11 : Reach Mumbai.

please comment
cheers!!!

Udaipur to Jaipur via NH76/ NH79 + NH8 after Kishangarh is 420kms. The road imo is one of the best in the country. It takes approximately 6 hours to cover this stretch i.e if you not going via Ajmer.

So if you wanna cover Ajmer in between I guess add 2 hrs more and if you wanna cover Chittorgarh also then add another 2 hrs. So basically Udaipur- Chittor- Bhiwara-Nasirabad-Ajmer-Kishangarh-Jaipur will take you about 10 hrs.

Regards

You could leave Udaipur, cover Ajmer and reach Jaipur the same day. However, please bear in mind that a small section between Beawar and Ajmer is currently in a bad shape.

To avoid the Beawar Ajmer stretch you could take NH76 to Chittaurgarh and NH79 from there to Nasirabad. Take the turn off to Ajmer from Nasirabad. It is well marked to your left and distance is 19 Kms.

Do keep in mind that mention of Chittaurgarh is actually a misnomer as the NH76/NH79 change over is actually 8 kms away from the city, not that it is a bad thing. The changeover which is also a turnoff to Kota is a masterpiece of road engineering.

From Ajmer proceed to Kishangarh on NH8 a distance of 35 kms. The NH8 merges into the NH79 onwards to Jaipur.
You could also comeback to Nasirabad and rejoin NH79 again from there towards Jaipur via Kishangarh bypass.

Yes I want to cover Ajmer, Lets leave Chittorgarh out for now, may include it later. OK why I asked the specific question about the dargah was to inquire about how much time would it take us to finish the visit and be back on the road considering it would be a sunday (I know fridays are crowded but what about a sunday?).

Thanks khoj for the detail. The distance shown in google maps increases by 40kms if I do Udaipur - Chittorgarh - Nasirabad - Ajmer, I hope it is worth the detour.

Also after Agra to proceed towards delhi Should I stick to NH2 or try the Yamuna expressway and then join back NH2 at Palwal. Which route would be faster?

Cheers!!

NH8 between Ajmer and Udaipur is 2-laned and has heavy truck traffic, whereas the NH79-NH76 combo via Nasirabad, Bhilwara & Chittorgarh is 4-laned (GQ) and super-fast.

Yamuna Expressway???!!! That is a long way from completion, construction has just begun. There is only NH2 from Agra to Delhi. Don't blindly go by what Google Maps says, the real world is very much different from their "vision" of India!

Saw quite a bit of talk of doing Ajmer and then continuing, very bad idea.We just came back 2 days back and we intended to do Jaipur-Pushkar-Ajmer and reach Udaipur the same evening. On paper it looked very simple, but when we reached there we found out how humanly impossible it is!!The roads to the dargah are extremely narrow and the shops have extended counters jutting onto the roads, people were parking their cars are the base of the hill and walking up which would mean a whole day's trek(not to forget the touts' harassment)we offered our respects from the car and drove out.Same case for Pushkar as well.

Dhiraj, your inputs were right about the chaos in Ajmer.

Another point for people going to Pushkar while coming from Kishangarh side,do not take the right before Ajmer town which points to Bikaner-Pushkar.Roads are non-existent and at the moment there is waterlogging as high as 3 ft on that road. Please go through the town and onto pushkar. It was the scariest drive of our entire drive because we took the bypass road. There is a new 4lane bypass being built but until that is completed please go through Ajmer town.

1. Udaipur-Chittor - Bhilwara - Nasirabad - Ajmer - Kishangarh- Jaipur route is much better than doing it on NH8 i.e Udaipur - Beawar - Ajmer. You will save a lot of time plus the peace of mind while driving you will get on this route is unparalleled. Hence I would say it is absolutely worth it.

Also since you are not very keen on Chittor then you can take the Chittorgarh bypass. That also saves a lot of time.

December, when you are travelling is the busiest month for tourist places at this part of the world. Hence Sunday or a weekday doesnt matter. Ajmer town maybe closed but tourist places will be busy like hell.

Honestly speaking untill and unless you are very religiously inclined then Ajmer can be given a miss. If you want to visit a Dargah, I would strongly suggest that you visit the Dargah at Fatehpur Sikri (on your way to Agra) rather than at Ajmer. ( Ranjit has already pointed out the reasons)

2. As pointed out by HVK the YExpressway is not yet ready, so you have just NH2 to drive on to Delhi from Agra.

3. December is the best time to see the birds in Keoladeo Ghana. Till last year the migratory birds had abandoned the park due to want of water. But thanks to excess rains this time the water bodies are full and they are expecting renewed activities from the migratory birds.

4. If you want to include Bharatpur and Fatehpur Sikri in your itinerary then my suggestion will be
