Kadri, this is currently the best route right? I will be driving down to Udupi on the 5th of Feb. So just confirming :)

adie, "Mudigere - Kottighera - Charmadi - Belthangady" this stretch will consume a lot of time. thanks to the winding roads with millions of potholes:)

Wow thats a good news indeed, was wondering why we dont have "Vajra" yet. i guess people traveling Udupi to Mlore will be more then pleased.

Kalasa to Kudremukh stretch is in decent condition. This is from my recent trip to Kudremukh.

From what I have heard recently is that Charmadi road is Quite good. The road from Belthangady to Udupi is also very good. This route has less traffic.

That's a great news! But, I have been hearing about this since 2008 and nothing happened :(.

Am not sure on the latest condition but 4-5months back when i had taken this route. Belur to Charmadi this had too many bad patches, charmadi was pretty decent but once you descend the road gets bad again..

But i guess after belthangady towards Udupi it should be good.

do watch out for "gramina sarige" buses....

adie, well my friend i really dont want to scare you much, but i feel you should come via Shiradi once. thereafter you wont notice any bad road;)

If Shiradi is not that bad now, I dont mind taking this route.

I drove this stretch lasy week in an Esteem. It takes a looong time. The road is not exactly horrible as Shiradi, but not smooth either. From Sulya to Kushalnagar it is a torture only.

Shiradi was closed recently not for repair but just to clear a landslide, just in case people were thinking something nice was happening on that stretch. Swift (that too new one) is a strict 'No No' on this stretch.

Please dont even dream of taking Shiradi ghat road. Its just horrible. I travelled this stretch on 17th Jan. The road condition is just horrible.

The repair work is going on in a extreemly slow manner.

Neither. Stick to the route you had originally planned. That is the best route to Udupi as of now. I'd driven down around Christmas and the condition was good. A couple of frequent travelers that I know of also swear by it.

That's the "Graamaanthara Saarige" buses. And yes, they drive as good or as bad as the private buses :). They are good at making their own way in dense traffic too, hehe.
