It seems the narrow overbridge was opened for 2 way traffic and we had a day long jam !! Heard this was jammed since morning.

Started 3 pm and reached 12 45 am ! Stopped for evening tea at Laxmi Nivas and Kamath for lunch

I was in this very jam at about 3:00 pm on Sunday !!

BC Road was very peaceful at the time I got past by it (started from M'lore at 530pm). Agreeing that Shiradi Ghat is back in it's "natural" form, now.

Also, to add, the toll fees at Bellur Cross and Nelamangala have been revised to Rs.41/- (Rs.38/- earlier), effective 12am, Sep, 1st.

No idea which fool decided to revise to 41. Why can't they keep just a round figure of 40. I witnessed arguments between drivers and booth attendants for that 1 rupee this morning. The daily pass is priced at 61.

Shiradi ghat to shut down December1 onwards.

They are very careful not to mention what kind of road. So if we see exactly the old kind of road, merely relaid, can't really protest.

The Shiradi Ghat work would be carried out in two packages — the first would be the 13.62 km stretch from Heggadde to Kempu Holey at a cost of Rs 69.90 crore and the second would be from Gulagalale to Heggadde, a stretch of 21kms and from Kempu Holey to Adda Holey, a stretch of 12.38kms at a cost of Rs 85.28 crore.

I think its percentage based and from what I know, in most cases the percentages would be pre-decided. In this case if you see its a 8% hike. If they had to move to 40, it would have been a 5% hike. So in percentage terms its a lot of difference.

But I agree its a major time killer. I think they should take this factor into consideration during the agreement phase itself.

The toll rates on NH4 seem to be raised in multiples of 5. Probably there the contract has a provision of rounding off to the nearest ₹ 5/- . Even there the collection of the ₹5/- change causes headaches.

When was this Highway renamed to NH75?
From my childhood I always knew this road as NH48.
Two days back my colleague contested that it's NH75.
He was proven correct by the many signs put up on the road. Google Maps however still shows NH48
I had not seen the signs earlier at all considering my native place is close to Sakaleshpur and I drive here frequently.

Just read this on The Hindu. For the benefit for T-BHP Members, here is the link:

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/...cle6378816.ece

I have nothing more to add.

And they have renamed NH-17 as NH-66. It simply doesn't make sense. Why was the renaming so badly required? It will be no different than renaming Bangalore to Bengaluru. Only adds to confusion.

I found an article from http://archive.indianexpress.com/new...ghways/549208/

Quote:

All national highways will have a new 'scientific and self-explanatory' identity starting next year. Taking a cue from the US highway numbering system, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has decided to re-number all 'predominantly horizontal corridors' in two digit odd numbers and the 'predominantly vertical corridors' in two digit even numbers. Three digit highways will indicate secondary routes and the English alphabet will be used for suffixes as the highway network swells up. Planning to stick to highway numbering between 1 and 99, instead of spilling well on the 200s, as is the case now, the new numbering will mean that the identity of each highway, as we know it now, will stand dissolved as highways will be viewed vertically or horizontally rather than the haphazard direction some of them move in.

The move to rechristen NHs — initiated by MoRTH Secretary Brahm Dutt in 2008 — is aimed at allotting new identities to the highways that are direction and area specific. A ministerial committee was set up last year to formulate a grid-like highway numbering plan and the same has been accepted by the MoRTH. The re-numbering process will begin next financial year — from April 1.

"The whole familiarisation process with the new NH numbering system will take longer. The exercise to renumber, replace all highway signage and familiarise the general public could take up to five years," said an official.

As per the plan, a 'predominantly horizontal corridor' would only be the one that is within 45 degrees of the east-west axis. It will have a two digit odd number identity and as one drives from the northern direction towards the south, the number will increase, giving a communter a fair idea of the direction towards which he is headed.

Similarly, a 'predominantly vertical corridor' would have to be within 45 degrees of the north-south axis and will come with a two-digit even number identity. As one drives from east to west, the number will increase indicating the direction change.
So, going by the logic, I came to know that NH75 is predominantly a Horizontal highway and lies toawrds the western side of the country. I don't know how useful this information is or will be to anyone :Frustrati

It won't be. I have driven over 100,000 miles in USA and their numbering scheme never really helped in any way. I drove prior to civilian GPS systems happened, so I mostly used AAA maps to find my way around. It didn't really matter whether the numbers were even or odd, as long as numbers were consistent and accurately marked in both map and along the road.

This re-numbering will make all the current GPS maps and paper maps out-dated and useless. And somebody will get fat contract to re-number the road signs and lots of people will get rich in the process.

I hope they realize that the existing Highway numbers are more than just a "number" They are a well established identity for the existing routes. They are more like a person's name. They could use the new convention for new roads or side roads.

We can expect a lot of confusion once this is implemented for atleast 5 to 10 years.

In the long run, this numbering system may work out positively (hopefully) if they implement it consistently. (Not like how they have renamed NH48 as NH75 (odd number) for a horizontal route. If they do it like this, chaos is guaranteed :))

Completely agree - Changing numbers just for doing something different is not helping anyone, it will in fact create a lot of confusion and unnecessary stress. Hope they rethink on it.

The B C road jam seems to be regular feature now! I had travelled to Mangalore and Udupi twice last month and I had a tough time getting out of them! I think this is because of the bridge widening work going on at the end of the fly over!

As usual we had the weekend racers and the ones driving with hazard lights on the ghat who simply ended up causing unnecessary jams.
