Hi Fellas,
A lot of good updated information on road conditions on this thread. Thanks! I'm traveling to Udupi on 17th Dec 2017 and this would be my first time on this route. For my onward journey I'll take the popular choice of route: Hassan - Belur - Banakal - Charmadi ghat - Karkala - Udupi
(Would love to know if there's any other route with better road condition, don't mind +/- 20km) |
Onward you can also try
Hassan-Belur-Chikmagalur-Agumbe-Udupi.
For the return you can try this route-
Kukke-Sullia-Sampaje-Holenarasipura-Channarayapatna-Nelamangala.
Did Sullia to Sampaje couple of months back and the road was good. Google maps gives a direct route from Kukke to Sampaje but I am unsure about the road conditions from Kukke to Sampaje. You can enquire in Kukke with cab/bus drivers heading to Madikeri about the latest road condition from Kukke to Sampaje. It has been a while since I saw anyone posting updates on Bisle Ghat.
Hello Bhpians, need inputs on this route :
Mangalore - Madikeri - Somwarpet - Arkalgud - Holenarsipura - CR Patna
This used to be the main route during the time when Shiradi was shut down, but want to know the present condition of this stretch.
Am planning to drive on this in the next week. Will be driving an i20 and will be with family.
Any suggestions or recommendations are please welcome !!
Thanks in advance !!
The stretch from Arkalagudu to CR Patna via HN Pura is in good condition, except that road work is in progress on small patches.
Hi friends,
Traveling next weekend from Bangalore to BC Rd /Bantwal to Mangalore and back. Traveling with elderly and need some advice on which ghat section to use.
Is 75 via Shiradi still the best option given the present road conditions (How much of the tarmac is bad - haven't travelled on it in a while) or should I use 75 till Hassan and then to 73, Charmadi - Ujire - Belthangady -Bantwal - Mangalore? My local bus booking chap was also indicating that they may close Shiradi anytime soon for road fixing works. Any pointers would be very helpful for route planning.
Thanks!
Guys, need some help.
This is the first time I am driving to Udupi.
Reading the last few posts I am inclined to take the Charmadi route instead of the Shiradi route.
When I googled it gave me another option via Agumbe (screenshot and link)
https://www.google.co.in/maps/dir/Be...7!2d13.3408807
Could you please suggest which route to take.
I will be with my family, and starting early in the morning around 5:30 am.
I prefer a scenic route rather than reaching there early.
Any inputs will be very helpful.
Since you say scenic, chikmaglur route should be great, I can suggest slight change via balehonnur-sringeri-agumbe. Hoping you are comfortable with winding roads
Alternatively, take the cr patna arasikere route and go via thirthahalli agumbe udupi. Route is less curvy but has more traffic till you cross shimoga

+1 to that. If you just want to drive through some good winding roads, Chikmagalur - Sringeri - Agumbe is a good option.

Folks
I will be travelling to Mangalore on 27th December morning and intend to take the following route: Mysore, Hunsur, Kushalnagar, Madikeri, Sampaje, Sullia and Bantwal. Is the above route preferred in terms of road conditions and options to break for lunch .
Or if I go via Hassan are there options to avoid Shiradi Ghats ??

I did this route last week on my way back from a place near Udupi. Good roads all the way through and a nice sumptuous lunch at Hoysala village in Hassan was the cherry on top.
Only change was I didnt go via Sringeri. The route I followed was :-
Hebri-Agumbe-Hariharapura-Balehonnur-Aldur-Chikmagalur
Hi guys,
I am planning a visit to Kukke Subramanya temple. Are the roads in good condition? Which is the best route to travel? Thanks in advance.

How did you reach Balehonnur from Hariharapaur directly? On Gmaps I don't see any major road connecting these two places.
This weekend I am driving to Kundapur, so would like to take this route.

Shortest would be via shiradi, with last 15 kms of broken roads till you turn near gundya.
I feel one can drive downhill via shiradi and decide if same route is ok uphill depending on the car GC or try charmadi as an alternative
