Re: Mumbai to Kanyakumari

You seem to have taken times directly from Google maps. practically speaking an hour more should be added to that timing especially for this route. I would suggest the below route (only small changes).
Day 01: Mumbai to Chiplun - day one - 250 kms - 6 hours of riding.
Day 02: Chiplun - Goa 340 kms - 8 hours of riding.
Day 03: Goa - Udupi - 302 km - 7 hours or riding
Day 04: Udipi to Thrissur - 400 kms - 10 hours of riding (Idukki will be stressful IMO)
Day 05: Relax
Day 06: Thrissur - Kanyakumari - 370 km - 10 hours of riding.
Day 07: Kanyakumari - Rameshwaram 310 km - 5 hours of riding
Day 08: Rameshwaram to Bengaluru - 570km - 11 hours of riding
Day 09: Bengaluru to Belagavi - 505 km - 9 hours of riding
Day 10: Belagavi to Mumbai - 482 km - 11 hours of riding.

I've assumed the following things:
You are experienced in doing long rides on bikes for continuous days
Bikes are sufficiently powerful and safe for long rides
You are more interested in the ride than spending time at the destination locations.

A friend and me wish to do a road trip on our bikes from Mumbai to Kanyakumari in the next week (nov 10th onwards). Considering the current mosoon, could you all help us with the conditions of the roads and also the best way around? Below is the planned route.

Day 1: Mumbai to Chiplun – day one - 250 kms – 6 hours of riding.
Stay at dongarmath resort. Either rest there or continue.

Day 2: Chiplun – Goa 332 kms – 7 hours of riding.
Stay anywhere – we can do a rest day here.

Day 3:
Goa – Udip – 302 km – 6 hours or riding

Day 4: Udipi to Thrissur – 400 kms – 9 hours of riding
Or Udipi to Idukki – 544 KM – 12 hours of riding

Day 5: Relax

Day 6: Idukki to Rameshwaram – 328 km – 8 hours of riding.

Day 7: Rameshwaram – Kanyakumari – 309 km – 6 hours of riding

Day 8: Kanyakumari to Bengaluru – 666 km – 12 hours of riding

Day 9: Bengaluru to Belagavi – 505 km – 8 hours of riding

Day 10 – Belagavi to Mumbai – 482 km – 10 hours of riding.

Do this sound like a doable plan? or is this ambitious. Also its critical to know we will be on bikes and hence we wont be allowed on expressways.

looking forward for all help.

cheers,
ac

Hi Hemant,

Thanks. We will be riding on a bonnie and a HD street. Bikes are sorted. And we have done a few rides - so i would dare to say we are experienced. Basically we want to do Mumbai to Kanyakumari. And stop at interesting places mid-way.

Any news basis the monsoon and the quality of roads, i read somewhere on T-bhp that the Goa - udipi stretch is quite bad.

cheers,
ac

Re: Mumbai to Kanyakumari

One factor you have to take into consideration is that these are coastal roads and state highways.
These roads are used by the local public to commute between small towns, and basically used as main city roads.
E.g. in the Mumbai to Chiplun sector, you will find state transport buses, small two wheelers, local taxi jeeps, tourist cars.
The highway has no median and hence people overtake by coming into the opposite lane.

This results in constant braking and accelerating, which kills your average speed. Also, your top speed cannot be more than 80 kmph since you will rarely find a clear patch of road.

I think you should assume an average speed of 40 kmph.

Day 10 - Belgavi to Mumbai - I usually do Pune - Belgavi in around 6 hours (with lunch and chai stops). You can do Belagavi to Mumbai in 9 hours easily.
