HI,

we are planning a small vacation in my new sx4 from chennai to rameshwaram and kanyakumari. we have a max of 4 days. please suggest the best routes from chennai. also suggest good places for sightseeing. It will be a more of religious tour, so please suggest the temples to visit.

Last week driven Bangalore - Madurai - Rameswaram. Roads are obsolutely great. Till Madurai, its 4lane, and afterwards Madurai - Rameswaram is single lane, but roads are in good condition.

Between Karur and Dindigal, there was too much of wind and I could feel the power of wind at my steering wheel.

This is my suggestion

Chennai - Trichy (Sri Rangam) - Pillayarpatti - Rameshwaram - Tiruchendur - Kanyakumari - Madurai - Palani - Chennai

Palani is optional.

The roads are very good.

Day 1 - Stay at Trichy

Day 2 - Stay at Kanyakumari

Day 3 - Stay at Madurai

Day 4 - Back home

All can be comfortably done in your SX4. Need to leave early in the morning everyday and have breakfast on the way which is not a problem in TN.

Guys, need some inputs on the route and road conditions.

I am visiting Rameshwaram day after tomorrow and will depart Chennai by midnight after picking up my wife from the airport. Google is showing this route:

Chennai > Villupuram > Trichy > Pudukottai > Karaikudi > Rameshwaram

The route from Chennai to Trichy is familiar to me since I’ve driven to Madurai. But Trichy to Rameshwaram is an undivided single laned road. How’s the road conditions on this route?

If anyone has traveled through this stretch recently, please let me know! Will update the conditions after I return on Sunday. TIA!

Yep. Trichy-Pudukkottai-Karaikudi now has fantastic roads unlike how it was in the past. Those who travel towards east can take this option comfortably. Only down side is there are no decent stop overs for any emergency, but actually for all practical purposes it is not required because either you have a break at Trichy or next at Karaikudi.

Trichy-Karaikudi is wide tolled 2-lane after which it narrows till Devipattinam. You can have a look at this video to get an idea

For a midnight start, you are looking at weaving through a huge set of buses till Trichy so be prepared for that. You'll be right behind buses that leave between 930pm and midnight to southern destinations.

Does anyone has any update on the acceptance of Fastag on the tolls along GST?

We did a Chennai to Rameswaram during the last weekend. Left Chennai on 12th August and returned on 15.

We got onto the GST at Chegelpet, and the details of tolls are as below.

First toll was at Athur - Rs 50/ and no Fastag.

After that, the rest till Rameswaram was Fastag ready, 6 of them, and if I remember right, 3 had overhead scanners and at the remaining 3, the hand held scanner was used. All Fastag lanes were blocked with a cone and only Fastag equipped vehicles were let through.



Now, dont ask me why that in the Lane Direction, one is showing W and the rest all E.

Drive safe and you have a good trip, and the same to Gannu_1
