Working with a real estate firm in Mumbai, I had the opportunity to extensively travel around the Mumbai region. I am putting up seven maps for your reference, mostly all doable on Saturday (0600 to 2030Hrs)- so you relax at home on Sunday. These are the ones I did.

I have another set of maps for two day rides, but I would need more time to assemble and post that.

All these roads are good (no off raoading, unless you want to) and safe to travel on, and all should be really scenic come June15th.

1. Powai- Kolad- Tamhini- Lonavala- Powai (345Km)

Powai, Maharashtra to Powai, Maharashtra - Google Maps

2. Powai- Kon Gaon- Kalyan- Malsej Ghat- Karjat- Chowk- Powai (359 Km)

3. Powai- Nagothane- Murud-Janjira- Alibag-Vadkhal- Powai (306 Km)

H&A: Good compilation!

There are a few others that you can do - some near by and some maybe a bit long though.

1) Kashid
2) Ganpatipule
3) Tarkarli (superb!)

Keep them coming

Are there any routes north of Mumbai doable in a day?

I think there are quite a few routes

Probably go to Bordi, Palghar, Silvassa and come back the same day.

North of Bombay:

Bombay-Dahanu-Bordi-Daman-Bombay

Bombay-Silvassa-Bombay

Bombay-Jawahar-Silvassa-Bombay

Bombay-Nashik-Saputara-Vapi-Bombay

Bombay-Gorai-Manori-Bombay

@hvkumar: The problem with the north is the heavy and continuous traffic all the way upto Manor and a little beyond. So from a casual driv it does become a little intense mentally. And the further your go, the more it resembles an industriailised highway... The roads east of the hwy are inviting, but I have had no particular remembrances that I cared to pen.

@saildrive: You took my words away, possibly they make it to my 2-day routes, in a few days time:)

@Ashish: My request would be to leave from home at 0600 and beat all the cross-city traffic and clear Vashi by 0645... then you are thru. First time, try the road to Tamhini via Kolad, and you will just LOVE the east and south of Mumbai. Come back from Tamhini via Pali of Ashtavinayak fame, and Khopoli to cut that long route short by almost 100Km.

@ H& M - Interesting thread. Bookmarking it. Would have to access it as soon as monsoon sets in.

I guess you are into selling plots/bungalow schemes when you say real estate business :D Else why these routes?

@Amit,
Am not into plots/bungalows or sales of the same. The real estate analogy is:
I have 2 MS's in marine biology, and that makes me an expert in choosing fish :)

Any further inference to work, and people may jump to conclusions... so thats best left alone.

Thanks for the vote on the bookmarking- and given the 2 day routes that should be on the net by Sunday, you should try and do a few of these now...

Else, like me, so many beautiful driving experiences around Mumbai, and just no time.

Thanks for your appreciation!

I was searching for one days trips from Bombay and here I find the perfect thread. Now I havent travelled a lot outside bombay in a car(Lonavala being the ony place I went driving with my friends). That was a 190km trip with really good roads. There are many places suggested here and I would like to drive there. But I want to know what all one can do at these places - like where to go inside Daman or what to see at Silvassa. Since it is a one day trip, one cannot do a lot of things but there must be some interesting things to do. I just do not want to drive there and come back. You guys seemed to have travelled all these places so you must be knowing these places very well.

P.S - I never liked going on long drives but after joining this forum and reading some of the travelogues I am dying to make a road trip.

Update: Route 1
After climbing Tamhini, dont turn off after reaching the top direct for Lonavala (sharp left turn @Mulshi)-DO NOT. This will be the route skirting Mulshi lake and the road is in 'bad-worse-no road' condition progressively towards the rear of the Sahara AAmby Valley project.

Carry on further to Paud and then ask for directions towards Pavananagar/Kolvan/Kamshet.

My Scorpio was not too happy with the Mulshi Lake edge drive. And my other colleagues who were in Corolla went from Mulshi-Paud, reached Hinjewadi and then Lonavala town at the same time...

KD

Please include the Karnala bird sanctuary, and also Matheran. About the bird sanctuary, I do not know if there are any birds left to be seen other than the sparrows and crows, but it does have a small fort that you can climb.

Also if you are taking the road to Matheran, there's some exciting (and dangerous at times) driving to be done in the ghats of Matheran.

You can include a visit to Hadshi as well from Mumbai - Lonavla - Kamshet - Hadshi.

Visited the Hadshi temple last weekend and it is really beautiful. Details in the below thread. The route while coming from Mumbai is explained by macbeth in one of the posts in the thread.

Here is a correction of an error, and quite a few people who tried this, were left wondering what Pen was doing in that route, along with a new route around Mulshi lake.-
EDIT

Route 4

The new route- was to do with a road that was recently completed and done up and now motorable.
