It seems, Optra is in everbody's mind. I liked every aspect of it. But as I have been doing more research on it I could see some Cons:

A. In Hyderabad they have only one dealer. So I may have less burgaining power and become very much dependent for after sales activities (servicing etc) on that guy.

B. I guess Chevy Cobalt (http://www.chevrolet.com/cobalt/) is the comparable version of it and selling for under Rs. 6 lakhs ($13,490) in USA. It also has 145 hp 2.2 L engine. After knowing this fact, I may again become hesitant.

C. Not sure about its resale value, as I may want to upgrade in 3 years once the Merc India prices will get somewhat comparable to its US counterparts (now there is a BIG discrimination.. )

Scorpio is still on my favourite list. I'll also test drive Cedia, Elantra, Octavia TDi and Innova for sure.

Which one does look best?
Dont even think Merc prices to be comparable to US prices in the near future.

for a sporty looking car

1. cedia (similar to 2004 US mitsubishi lancer ES with same engine)
2. octavia ( not sure but maybe it is Wolkswagon Passat platform)
3. optra ( the suzuki forenza)
4. elantra (similar to Hyundai elantra in US with old rear)

for a luxurious car

1 optra
2. octavia
3. cedia
4. Elantra

Scorpio is an excellent Indian car and you will be a happy owner. lack of space is an issue and compared to other MUV's this ones just about average in what it does. But makes for an excellent value for money and CRDE diesel is a boon.

Elantra is another car where you would be paying less for a hyundai Elantra in comparison to prices in US. $14000US compared to 9 something here.

PS:- please include prices for tax, shipping and handling and insurance and you will find that the difference in prices will be less than what you find currently.

Believe in yourself... I think Sudip 'Kar' is the answer...

This is a season of renunciations. If you have renounced the US, why not try 'Inkaar'...

Check out the Innova Petrol, G3 loaded version has a very steep discount (1.25L). The Petrol version is silky smooth and it comes with the legendary Toyota reliability.

Corolla's an extremely reliable car and has a very good engine, but it costs more than 10 lakhs (approx 11-13 I think), which is why I think no one has mentioned it.

Bought Elantra CRDI Leather

And after carefull thoughts I bought Elantra CRDI (Leather). and got the delivery on day before yesterday. The on-road price was 10.47 Lakh in Hyderabad and it is almost 2 Lakh below December, 2005 price (that also attracted me). I booked golden color and learnt that the delivery time is one month. After about 3 weeks got a call from the dealer (Talwar Hyundai of Hyd) that the color I'll get is either Charming Grey or White. I had an option of either to cancel or to take one of these. I opted Charming grey and here is the car I got. I love this color though. What do you think?

My new Elantra pics are here: http://summitteamatcte.photosite.com...aCRDI-Leather/

Copying one here too:
