Automatic Transmission in 5-8L

Am looking for a automatic transmission based car in the 5-8 Lacs range. Any suggestions?

Also, my friends tell me that Automatic Transmission does not work in India and will wear away soon due to rough traffic conditions, is that true? I am ok with the reduced mileage but if its going to give me problems in the long run then its a no-no.

Thanks
Anand

Two cars in that range:

Santro
Wagon R

Understand from what I have read on T-BHP that Santro is a better choice.

My friend has been driving a Santro AT for the last few years and hasnt faced a problem.

Sadly, you don't have much options in that price range!

As Wheeliej said, you have Santro & Wagon R. And Honda City CVT (if you can stretch your budget to 9 lacs).

I have a Santro auto. Its done 56,000kms and still runs as new.
dont believe whatever everyone tells you about automatics. I think in a crowded city's traffic, an auto is a boon. Just get it. The only other choice is a Wagon R which is a no-no. Because the Wagon R is a three speed as compared with the Santro's 4 speed (three+overdrive)
The other choice is a second hand Honda city CVT or a Toyota Corolla which you may get in the 6.0 lac range. I would suggest the Corolla as its a more engaging drive than the CVT's rubber band type of feel.

vanandmsv i would suggest the santro xing automatic in the price range mentioned by you. the other choice if you could stretch a bit would be the second hand corolla automatic. i have two of them the first lot and the new corolla both auto and am totally happy with them. all my cars are automatics and have never faced any problem. the automatic transmission are boons in the traffic conditions and very stress free driveing.
i would suggest you get the automatic and you will really have a blast.

Am looking for a slightly bigger car than a Santro or a Wagon R. Would've been great if SX4 or Verna had a Automatic variant. And corolla is a bit over my budget, if I stretch that far then I would also look at a Scoda/Laura.

I can see we dont know much about Hyndai Pa, but how about news on any existing models bringing in a Automatic variant? Anyone with a headsup on that?

Auto transmission works anywhere, and if a lot of your driving is in city traffic, it should be as good for India as it is for London!

But buy carefully and test drive in the conditions in which you'll drive the car. AT can be sluggish compared to the manual version, the best AT gearboxes come in very expensive cars. Just be sure you're happy with what you're getting, and you should have a good time with it

Im driving the santro AT since 2 yrs now. The car is great when there is B2B traffic. I don't think the car is
sluggishs at all. Works like any other santro.

Since you want something bigger than the Santro, stretch your budget to the NHC CVT. This cars owners are extremely happy with their choice.
