Used Car Dilemma

Hey all
I am in a big dilemma, need help in choosing a used car in a budget of
5-6lakhs,car would be used by me and sometimes for occasional family outings.
And not to mention vehicle will not see anything more than like 12-15K kms a year,so it can either be a petrol or a Diesel.
Since we already have a Bolero GLX so a Safari or a Scorpio is out of the question, so is a hatch, since a boot is needed to carry load for the farm.
I dont need a model that has been out of production for long, like a Baleno or a OHC,and may be a Elantra also.
Also Car should not be hefty on maintainence, and cost of spares should be easy on the pocket. And the car should not have too much miles on ODO and should not be more than 3 years old,or at the max 4 for a skoda
Some options I have thought of.
1)NHC ZX-only factor that goes against it that,I somehow dont appreciate its looks(may be it grows on me over time),also lack of fun to drive factor(IDSI engine,as I wont get a VTEC in my budget)
2)Ford Fiesta-Recent Upgrade,
1.4TDCI-Awsome KMPL figures,Lack of punch as compared to other diesels
1.6-Hoot to Drive, might not be able to find decent used examples.
3)Hyundai Verna-Can I find one in my Budget?
4)Suzuki SX4
1st preferance,fun to drive,decent mileage,but can I find one in Used Market?

5)Now I have been just toying with this.
A Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI
Tank Like build quality, nice driving experience along with a nice oil burner.
Only thing that goes against it that I may not be able to find a less used example in my budget and the car might be like more than 60K kms old and like a 2003 or max 2004 model.

Guys Help

You may get many
I would recommend you a Skoda Octavia. You will get many cars in the 2003/2004, but then 60k kms is a bit tough to find.
Try Team-bhp Classifieds or carwale.com
You may Find some there!

EDIT : Or even try a Used Corolla, if you can find one in your budget, it will be excellent ( though a new model is expected by next month.)

I second abhinav and would suggest Octavia for its build quality and sturdiness. For the budget you have, i think you should be able to zero it down. You can also try to locate a used Baleno and am sure it will definitely be well within your budget.

I think both of you missed the "cost of spares" part

You can find some very good Corolla's under 6L and that IMO would be the perfect choice given your needs.

The Indigo clan seems to be your best bet yet.

Akshay - You would do well by reconsidering the 1.4TDCi. On paper it is a kitten, but can growl like a tiger, if you give it some stick. In other words, if you are willing to sacrifice some of that efficiency, she is fast !

@ 6.5 you should be able to put your hands on a brand new Logan DLE, so why bother to look at used...?

stick with a decent Corolla dude. (my personal preference)
I think you can get a 2004 corolla run about 20-30k on the odo for that price.

Perfect value for money.
great car in all respects.

Else like how Abhinav and Maverick suggested, go for a Skoda octy 1.9.
But the only issue, like how you already mention; it would have run more than 50k on the odo.

Are you going to take a loan, Akshay? In that case, a used car for 6 lakhs may work out as expensive as a new car for 7 lakhs. You can buy several new diesel cars (Dzire, Logan, Indigo etc.) in that budget.

If you must buy used, I'd say go for the Corolla. Great backseat, good reliability, fast, fuel efficient and will last forever.

Dude go for New Logan or Indigo where you get the boot space for your farm needs & you will be getting a new vehicle which has done below 100kms run at the same price which you are planning to spend on a 2nd hand vehicle.

why waste spending money on 2nd hand vehicle to run in a good condition, when you can get a 3yrs warranty for the new vehicle.

Considering the vehicles mentioned by you as parts & service costs are high.

Give a second thought on your selection

Only thing that i didnt think of a corrola is that its going to be phased out soon.
The car will not be financed so in case it is I might think of a new one.
still in a fix, will try to visit used car market over weekend to have a fair idea of whats available in the market.

What about NHC ZX IDSI no one recommends that is it sooooo bland to drive since i have never extensively driven one

@Akshay - Couple of things i know after driving an Accent earlier.
- Great Fun to Drive car and very sensitive power steering.
- I dont know if you have found a CRDi or a Petrol.
- Maintenance is not very high on a Accent, regular service intervals is good enough to keep the car running around.
- One of the advantage's is you can get this car serviced from a local mechanic, this can help in bringing down the service labor costs charged by Hyundai A.*.*
- Mileage is pretty decent for a petrol and for CRDi its extremely good.
Disadvantages
- Stability on high speeds is an issue.
- Ground clearance is not very great.

If you are still on the hunt, as others have suggested you can get a Corolla (2004-2005 model) for 6Lacs, but remember there would be no warranty. When i purchased my Corolla in the used market i came across some Fiesta's and also base Verna (petrol) within 6Lacs.

Happy hunting.
