Hi everybody,
I have been searching for a good used Diesel Sedan and i have decided to buy a Lancer Diesel. After started my search i could not find a reasonably good Lancer with a reasonable price here at chennai.
In between i came across two Hyundai Accents.
The first one is Accent DLS. The ODO shows 90000 km, and the owner is quoting 2,30,000/-. The owner is III owner and says the car gives a mileage of 16-18 kmpl.

Second is Accent CRDI. The ODO shows 75000 km, and the owner is quoting 4,00,000/-. The owner is I owner and says the car gives a similar mileage of DLS.

I request all to suggest me whether should i go for either of these deals or should i wait for Lancer. My budget is 3.5L.

Thanks for all.

Both seam a bit expensive deal.
Check both the cars and also try to haggle a bit.
a 2,00,000 would be more suitable for a 90k km run 3rd owner car
By the way do mention the years of the car for a better judgment on the price!

Wait for a good lancer to come bye. Nothing can touch the Lancer as far as trouble free service is concerned. The drive train should last you atleast 2 lakh km. Forget the Accnet dls and taking into consideration the repair expense of a 90000km run Accent CRDI stay away.

Stay away from the accent dls as it has the peugeot Tud5 engine (can somebody confirm) which does not make too much power. the only positives are amazing mileage and a pretty good aircon. The lancer diesel also does not have the best diesel engines around. Of the three I would pick an accent crdi. See if you can find a less used one.

i have a DLS done 1.4lakh kms and still shining.. i wont sell it ever. the engine is BULLETPROOF!! TUD5 peugeot ..and yes the pick up n stuff is moderate .
not stonking like CRDI. but yes its an IDI engine. revs happily but takes time to rev. i have done 150kmph on it, 130kmph is still easy for my sweetheart. ;)
and yes maintanance [ except for engine is cheap.] the pump and copressor are notoriously costly.
be sure to take the one with Bosch pump. not the lucas TVS. they werent as smooth as the bosch pump.
i just got my FIP recalibrated she now literally flies!! did a 120kmph in no time in 4th gear!!.
i have done a lot on this car regulaer maintanance that is. have got an idea of all the spare part prices.
be carefull of the pump. its a freakin 55k rs..and ac compressor is 10-20k other things like clutch n pressure plate- 6k suspension struts are 2.5k all sides..
suspension insulations 1.5k each front sides, then 2.5k rs for rear.
then what ..timing belt and stuff at 80k service!! is around 10k .
lights front and rear within 2krs. ..its pretty cheap to maintain if you ask me.
the power window motors and stuff if tht needs fixing then it will take 2-3k for replacing motor. other wise 850 buks for winding assembly.
instrument cluster is like 6k rs,.and then what. regular service with air and feul filter replacement is 2k rs. fan motor and belt assembly and stuff is like 6k rs. bush and stuff 500rs or so i guess.
for lancer the spares will be freaking costly trust me when i say this my friend ended up paying 60k for suspension overhaul!! and be carefull not to break the lights rear and front are 6k rs each side!!. i heard that the lancer spares have been given a cost cutting and now are reasonably priced but never expect it to be as cheap as accent.
the CRDi is a 3pot it has some inherent problems and yes . there was a problem in the alloy used for making the cylinder chamber. this led to the 60k kms engine overhaul problem!!. so be carefull and yes the system is pretty complex its a EDC15 system.
now not available freely. and therefore ECU probs might be costly to fix.
but yes lancer has a problem of low ground clearence..so watch out.
my sweetheart is gonna be 7yrs old this september..hihi. just love her.
peace out sameel :D

The Peugot TUD5 also did service in Esteem Di, Zen Di and Peugot 309D; one of my friend who owned a Zen Di had tough time sourcing engine spares, seeingly they had to be imported from France, it took ~2 months. It was also a tad noisy.
Safe bet to stay away from the Accent DLS!

The Accent CRDi is a stonker but can get easily spoilt by inferior fuel quality and this is too a discontinued model.

The Lancer is a reliable workhorse and is still in production, with HM you can be rest assured that it will live another 50~100 years (Amby heritage), the engine+tranny should easily cover 2L kms and it rides on a rally heritage suspension and the ride quality is just awesome...

My choice would be a FIAT Petra 1.9D - its rock solid, reliable & true VFM, but will come at the cost of sourcing spares. There was also the Siena 1.7TD that was workaholic but better avoided.

In your search you may come across the Opel Astra 1.7TD, safe to stay away from it due to maintenance woes.

Just in case you are lucky, you may hit Peugot 309D for a song! Just watch out for rustness!

All the best in your search and keep us posted on what you finally chose!

Apologies for not mentioning the year of manufacture,
the Accent DLS is 2001 model and Accent CRDi is 2005 model.

Thanks all for your valuable time.

I can add to Sameel, stay away from the CRDi - the more people I talk to, the more I hear about the Accent CRDi not being bulletproof/as long lasting as the Lancer one.

At the same time, wonder if your budget is 3.5L, whether you're ready to spend another mini fortune repairing issues?

Why I say is because a friend who tinkers with diesel engines for a living, told me to stay away from old NA engines done around 1L km because without a good mechanic, you can be easily misled. Takes a small amount of tinkering to make them sound good as new (unlike as much old petrol) and within 2-3k km, the engine will revert to its pre-honeymoon state and you'd be left holding the baby, so to speak :D

/who said no to a Palio 1.9D done 80k km for above reasons.

everyone is telling not to go for DLS.. here in cbe, my car was asked for by three guys one is a PM in my own comany..lolz.
check in cbe pretty tough to find one as most dont sell it .. the engine is too good mine still gives me 20+kmpl in highway and 18+ in city .. AC is chilling .. that is the plus point actually. but even for spirited driving also she is ok. dont expect that you can outrunn others like in a verna :D.
100-120kmph is a breeze.
but yes here in the forum the car is too underpowered ..lolz. reliabilty is what i look for . niether me nor dad is fond of selling the DLS. and yes mine is the only DLS still goin to MGF for regular maintanance..hihi.
i saw one with 3lakh on the odo!!. she still had no prblems in engine!!.
one thing to lookout in a lancer is the underbody... and never go for modded ones. they will be a pain later..and yes then dont think of the othr diesels ford especially..its maintanance is real heavy!!.
one good idea is look for a car from north ..trust me when i say this in south especially in cbe and in cochin..price will be high for used cars!!. the maintanance is also as such..hehe ..yup my car service details is still available to date @MGF cochin.
always go for such a vehicle. it will save a lot of trouble in the future and yes try always have around 50k rs foe immediate repair works when you go for a lancer this is mainly for brakes and suspension !! they are costly..

@forerunner : Please mention your budget for a used diesel sedan.
@sameel: you are the first person i heard saying the TUD5 is too good. I think it is downright crappy in terms of power and is good for nothing except mileage and AC; this is coming from a person who has had about 10 cars wit TUD5 engines in the family(I live in a joint family) over the past 10(+/-) years; this included 6 zens, 3 esteems and an accent.( we still have an esteem). Before any one points out why we bought the same car even after knowing the perils of the same, it was because of the lack of funds or the lack of a better car overall in the same segment. Once the car does over 1 lakh kms you will fall asleep before it does 120 :D.
The good things though are the ac, mileage and reliability. Some juggad can always be done to get it to move even in the most remote places which wont be possible in a really modern diesel like the accent crdi.

yaar why all this hassel, just get a well maintained and used bolero 2.5, the mahindra engine is quiet reliable, if the vehicle is properly maintained then it should be on the lowest maintainance vehicles with decent FE and a very good after sales service.

any thoughts on that? at least i think its one of the best things to do.

everyone seems to complain of the power, sure it cant be compared to the likes of verna and such but as far as i have driven it, 130kmph is routine for me :D. even now i usually do 80-90 in 3rd gear itself. i havent felt that loss of power or stuff.. the best part is this that its dam reliable. no engine problems in mine done 1.4lakh kms and a friends DLS done 3lakh!! kms. there was one with my college chairman also that also did 2lakh kms and it was sold off for a laura i guess..TUD5 engine is good when it comes to reliability and in the used car market thats what counts. power is secondary. here everyone wants power but for a used car its reliabilty that counts...
and not only that the accent DLS has still got spare parts supply available from hyundai. its still gonna be around [the service and spares support for next ten years as told to me.. thanks to lpg and cng avatar of accent coming out] the engine parts are costly. but the lancer engines parts arent costly..they are sky high costly..lolz.
a 1lakh km service for a lancer was done for a friend of mine@ 80k.. he did have an option to do it for 60k or so from outside dealer but he took it to dealer for peace of mind. and yes he is still happy with the car. no issues. in coimbatore and cochin lancer and accent DLS are much in demand.the latter is very rare to find.
its been a while since i heard of one for sale. its for a friend of mine.. and the easy part is that its pretty easy to service and repair and stuff. no complicated systems.
for trouble free ride the DLS and lancer are best bet with the latter being a tad heavy on the pocket! thats all.
i still know that for practical use in city or highway the DLS of mine is more prefered by my dad it makes sense when his intensions are to just cruise at max 70-80kmph! ..whereas i have been using the verna....damn she flies..lolz.
and yes the regular service like brake pad and stuff comes to 1.5rs wheras lancer comes to 4krs minimum ans suspension work is real costly for a lancer the clutch and pressure plate replacement normally recommended at every40-50k[ depends on driving habit as well] kms is at 14-15K rs. for the DLS its at 6-7k rs! .
all going for a second hand remember that the maintanance will be an issue and diesel cars have higher costs for spares.
even now the cheapest option when maintanance is the criteria then only DLS counts. peace out.
sameel

Missed to mention the Ford's, iKon 1.8D and Escort 1.8D - both are better avoided! Your safest bet seems to me the Lancer 2.0D or the Petra 1.9D. My friend recently sold his 1Lakh run good condition 1999 Lancer 2.0D for 3.25Lakhs in Coimbatore - it was still running gr8!

Go for the the Lancer !! Few of my friends have maint. expenses on their CRDI after 70 k. So its better u stay away from a 2nd hand CRDI.

@ Airwind not easy to get a 2nd hand Fiat Petra 1.9 D. I myself own one but not getting very good resale for it!
