OHC 1.3 v/s 1.5

hey guys,

need your opinion on this one .

I am planning to go in for a used OHC 2001 or 2002.

the only question in mind is whether to go in for 1.3 or 1.5 ?

Is that 10 bhp advantage which the 1.5 has over 1.3 justified for the difference in price around 50 K between the 2 models ?

Is it just the engine capacity cc which is different between these models or are there some other differences wrt gearbox, trim , etc apart from the automatic transmission which is optional on the 1.5 ?

Does the 1.3 feel a tad underpowered at times ? especially with 5 people on board with ac on ?

How much gain in fuel efficiency does a 1.3 offer over the 1.5 ?

any pointers would help.

I do not have specific answers to your questions, but I know what the overwhelming majority of people on this forum (including me) will say:

'1.5 BAYBIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE'

Owned both. Can't really find too much fault with the 1.3. But to be honest, I never tried comparing them in terms of sheer driveability.

Not much difference in trim. Horrid fake wood is what you get on the 1.5. We got it removed. Also, some earlier 1.3 models did not have a tachometer. Only the 1.3 DX had body coloured side mirrors and door handles. 1.3 LXi didn't have power steering or power windows. Stereo system is the best on the 1.5, out of the three.

1.3 is slightly better in terms of mileage. But why not a Vtec? Mileage is better than a 1.5, if I remember right, and there's no beating the kick of variable valve timing!

Ajmat: what heavy breathing? You have a turbo hidden somewhere on the Vtec?!

Vtec controller rigged to an airflow controller, that's all I can think of!

Adityapd, try to get a Vtec. Worth it, unless you plan mods like a turbo etc...

It's obvious that since the 1.3 is a smaller engine, but essentially the same otherwise, it would give superior mileage.

Well, I get over 15 from a 1.6, so it does come down to driving styles.

ps... get your exhaust leak solved. that would account for atleast 1kmpl!

Aditya,

If its for an enthusiast (translated you), go ahead with the 1.5. You will ALWAYS lust after 1.5's if you get a 1.3.

This may sound silly - but why not look out for Vtecs also? I have seen some fantastic deals around.

Thanks guys ..knew that vtec would always be a better option but had ruled it out due to budget constraints :( ....

budget is around 4.00 and can stretch to 4.5 max....

GTO, it would be great if you can mention some of the good deals on vtecs that you know of....would prefer buying directly from the owner rather than a dealer / broker...

ps: just an after thought, would love to wait for some more time until the civic is out as that would add some more depreciaton element in the used vtec market...what say ?

I think you'd get a vtec for around 4.5 Lakhs but you'll have to search.....hard.

hey adi,

if u have a racing blood in u, and would really revv ur vehicle around town, then go for the 1.5, eyez closed! but if its for normal regular use, and u dont race ur vehicle much, then the 1.3 is your best bet.

with the ac on, and 5 ppl sitting, the 1.3 aint that bad, its good enough. but i think there will be differences in the interiors. i am not sure if the 1.3 has powered side mirrors, and wodden dash trims, but 1.5 do have them!

about mileage, 1.3 will give u around 1-1.5 kmpl more than the 1.5. but dont go for a vtec at any case, as heard lotsa horrible stories about it.

hope this helps.

Have seen loads of 2000 / 2001 Vtecs going for 4.5 to 4.75. All depends on your bargaining skills.
