Small cars have become cheaper

petrol cars upto 1200 cc and diesel cars upto 1500 cc- excise has gone down from 24 to 16 %. Plus the length of the car should be less than 4000mm.

Great news for new car buyers.

Doesnt really make much difference to me as I dont see myself buying a car within those CC limits in the near future.I dont pay excise anyways since Thane registeration doesnt levy excise duty.
Whats i am most eager to hear is an import duty cut!! Any news?

The Indica is 1405 cc in both petrol and diesel.
The Indica benefits in diesel form but not in petrol form. The Indica Turbo will look very tempting now, I think.

I thought Thane was exempt from Octroi...excise is a central subject - how can Thane have exemption?

Petrol Xeta is 1396cc. Reason, Europe, below 1400cc pay lower taxes.
As for diesel it will benefit from the excise duty cut, but not the petrol. And yet The turbo will be 25000-30000 cheaper now!
If getz gets the 1.5 litre engine, It will surely benefit from the cut. Now it can be competition to the indigo!

I stand corrected by tsk1979 regarding the Xeta. The pre Xeta Indica petrols were 1405 cc.

Which cars qualify for price cuts?

Finance Minister P Chidambaram has reduced the excise duty on small cars to 16%. So, which cars qualify?

1. Cars not over 4,000 mm in length - Maruti 800, Omni, Alto, Zen, Wagon R, Tata Indica, Hyndai Santro all qualify for the reduction in excise duty to 16% from 24%.

2. Diesel engines not over 1500 CC - Tata Indica, Suzuki Swift Diesel with the upcoming 1.3 Ddi engine from the new engine plant, Hyundai Getz if it gets the 1.5 litre CRDi engine will qualify.

3. Petrol engines not over 1200 CC - Hyundai Getz Petrol, Suzuki Swift Petrol, Indica Petrol, Palio Petrol, though they meet the 4000 mm restriction, has petrol engines bigger than 1200 CC displacement and will not qualify.

>> Then what about our Bangalore-based electric car? What would be the result if someone comes up with a hybrid car...?

This is awesome news for the Small Car Buyers...

this would also fundamentally change the future Investment decisions by all major Manufacturers in India....

We can see a slow down in the 3 box , + 1200cc petrol & 1500cc diesel cars..

I guess this should even have a impact on the 2 wheeler sales....

All in all..this will shake up the Indian automobile market...
