I was on my way to work on my bike as usual yeterday. Stopped at a red light when an elderly man pull up on a scooter next to me and looks over at the bike.

He asks me what CC it is. I tell 400cc. He nods and then turns around to talk to the pillion behind him.

"this bike has the power of 4 horses. My bike has only 1 horsepower, but this one has 4!" The pillion listens attentively and agree's with the old man.

The signal turns green and we move off, but I couldn't help but laugh in my helmet at that statement! Just one of the many amusing things you'll hear when riding a bike in India.

400cc::4horses!? Ok :D

what can I say ??? Just laff it off .....

400cc=4 horse :Shockked: :Frustrati great calculation!! may be then if its a 1000cc car then its 10 horse!! lol:

then a 2litre Cedia = 20 horses .....
WOW ... i always knew there was a simple way of calculating the Horse Power of a vehicle ... Now we got it ...

now now .. lets look at both sides of the coin ..
1000bhp veyron = 100,000 CC clap:

why do people talk when they don't know about stuff??

Does anyone remember there was a member who said the same thing some time ago. Maruti 800 haveing 8 horses.

hahhah thats something i haven hear before.i think in one of the threads there was a similar goof up.im not making fun of the people who dont know stuff.i just feel the less one knows , the less said the better.

Ahhahahahhahahahahahahaaaaa

(Yeah that was long enough)

In the older days people used to refer to a vehicle's power by its cc. I remember one of my uncles telling me that our Amby was 15 hp, and the same guy referring to my KB100 as a 1 hp bike.

Perhaps that was an accepted method of measuring power at that time, because I've seen some old RC books with the same sort of terminology. From what Rtech says, the gentleman who made the comment seems to come from the same age group. Hence he is analysing the difference in power using his (admittedly ancient, but so is he) frame of reference.

Perhaps some of our more experienced members can throw some light on this?

Oh boy I sure remember him and his horse carts doing over 60 kmph on the highway.

And Rtech similar thing happened to me as well ... A friend of mine who doesnt know anything about cars once saw this green Palio with 4 CC no. plate on its rear, so he asks me does this car have 4 cc engine. Some of my friends and myself had no option but to laugh and abuse him.
And ya correct him desperately. :D

hahhaha got it here it is.check out the 2nd and 3rd pages of this thread.
Maruti 800 = 8 horses LOL.

Before everyone laughs their heads off at the old man's ignorance, perhaps you should read this:

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2005/200...y/motoring.htm

To quote:

Somewhere along the way it came to light that the size of the cylinder, bore and strike which determined the output of power had a volumetric capacity of a hundred cubic centimeters or 100 cc as it is commonly called to put out 1 horse power. So logically one hp equalled 100 cc. This formula served the industry and the motorist well.

So yes, but that yardstick Rtech's bike is rated at 4hp and the Maruti 800 is 8hp.

Anyone, apart from the support team, remembers Montoya's formula? It was remarkably similar to this one.
For those who don't, here it is
