New owners details not yet updated on "http://www.btis.in/rto"

Hi, about 2years back i sold my car(OHC), today when i just checked for owners details on "http://www.btis.in/rto", i was shocked it still has my name and the new owners details has not been updated!

so that give rise to couple of questions:

1. So does this means in RTO they have not updated their records though the ownership has been transferred?
2. Do i need to worry about this, i know the owner has transferred to his name.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: New owners details not yet updated on "http://www.btis.in/rto"

In my case, one of my cars that came off the company lease was transferred to my wife. It has not been updated. My Tata Sierra which was sold in 1997 is still in my name, I did get a B extract which said the registration was transfered to RTO E-City.

Praveen Sood has commented that their data base is out of date. They only get what the RTO gives them. My guess is unless there is a severe incident and the actually go to an RTO office, very little up to date informatuion will come out of it

My Indica i sold in 2008 and it looks like it has been transferred to the new owner. Excellent find @lohithrao thank you so much for this.

My wife would now be relieved as there is proof of the successful transfer. We did get a receipt and confirmation from the dealer but were not really sure that it has been done.

Re: New owners details not yet updated on "http://www.btis.in/rto"

My Accent sold to Mahindra First Choice in Oct 2007 is still in my name! This is utter nonsense: had checked about a year ago and was surprised to see this, nothing;s changed even now.

Basically it means that if the current owner goes and gets involved in some incident of some kind, any aggrieved party can look up the number and believe me responsible for it even though I haven't owned the car or even lived in Bangalore for the past 4 years!

I guess we should be thankful the RTO doesn't include other personal details that would probably make it much easier for anybody to track down owners.

Aside: isn't this a clear violation of privacy? The passport offices have a similar facility by which you can track your passport application status online using file number. Since the files numbers are sequential, I can effectively get a bunch of names & DOBs just by entering different file numbers. What a fail!

The car we bought two years back is transferred to our name, but does not yet reflect on the BTIS website. Dont know why they maintain such a site...

Re: New owners details not yet updated on "http://www.btis.in/rto"

Interesting link. I am convinced that it is not updated. My Ford Ikon which I sold over 6 months ago is still in my name and my current car, SX4, does not seem to exist .

Also my bike that was sold over 2 years ago is still in my name.

Re: New owners details not yet updated on "http://www.btis.in/rto"

The SELLER has an obligation to inform the RTO about the vehicle's sale and details of the new owner.

I bet you have not done that??

Usually, we leave it to the buyer to do such things; but things do not always work out that way. The buyer can simply get lazy and may prefer not to get the vehicle registered into his name (liability in case of accident continues to be on heads of the registered owner).

EDIT:- IIRC, we have a thread on selling vehicles and formalities involved..

A very common problem. Setting up a website is far far easier than keeping it updated! Also, you get Brownie points for the former but not the latter.

Atleast Bangaloreans have a website to find out the status of their sold vehicles, other cities dont have that privilage.

When I had sold my Santro I had taken care to mail to both the RTO's of the change of ownership documents and have kept a copy of the Speedpost reciept as well as delivery receipts as backup. I dont know whether this would be of any use in future.

I have to copy of the RC with transfer to the new owner endorsed in it.

Do i still need to inform my RTO ? or is it taken care by the other RTO to which it is transferred?

Re: New owners details not yet updated on "http://www.btis.in/rto"

Obviously no.

IIRC, the transfer of ownership involves (a) seller informing his RTO about sale. (b) buyer applying for registering the vehicle in his/her name.

In between, an NOC is required if buyer and seller are in different jurisdictions. And several nitty gritty - like financier's NOC (if finance is involved), insurance, etc.

Unless both a and b are satisfied, the vehicle will not be transferred. What I said is that usually, both a and b are done the buyer. But since liability in law rests on the registered owners, seller always should ensure that the vehicle actually gets transferred to buyer's name ASAP.

Once transfer is actually effected, it may be another story if it is not reflected in the online database. KL has fully computerised driving license and vehicle registration databases - so all transfers happen on the system. So, there is (usually) no lag.
